The Ascent is a true homage to the classic top-down shooter genre that adds some modern features without disrespecting its main inspirations.

It is always said that games must be judged for what they are and not for what we would like them to be: Star Renegade is a strange mix of strategy and jrpg, all under the umbrella of the roguelite-genre that ends up delimiting, and partly limiting, all the best aspects of the game. I could not stop thinking, at each run, that a normal campaign, even a short one, would have benefited the pace of the game and could make all the mechanics make it shine at their best.

Insomniac Games delivers a traditional Metroidvania with a pleasant atmosphere and an intelligent use of backtracking. Song of the Deep is a solid adventure, with some memorable boss fights and a complex level design.

Francisco returns on the scene with another metroidvania, adding, in order to renew the genre, rogue-like elements. The result is satisfying but imperfect, especially as regards the balance. It represents a shooter inspired exponent of the genre, with a slight irony that lies underneath and involves the player. If youre a fan, youd better have a look at it.

Slain! is in the middle between its beautiful atmosphere and its problematic gameplay, which is unable to fully valorize it. The biggest problem lies in its structure, enjoyable but still wasted if compared to the game's potential.

Shadow Complex needed a lifting. The remastered edition improves some post-processing effects, add some new textures, and in the end remains the great metroidvania that Chair developed few years ago. The uninteresting story is the biggest letdown of the game, that stands out when it comes to gameplay and level design.

The PvE and co-op experience that Battleborn provides is futile and scarcely interesting. On the PvP side Gearbox's title proves more whorty, but the game has too many gameplay issues to stand out in the competitive moba-like scene.

Deadbolt is a small action game that can be extemely funny. The gunfight tension is worth more than the gunfight itself: a fundamental rule in cinema that Hopoo Games perfectly applied to its videogame.

Four years after the original release, Resident Evil 6 is pretty much the same game. The HD version shows the usual technical improvements of many other remaster (1080p and 60 frame per second), but nothing more. Disappointing for the fanbase, Resident Evil 6 is a huge title but is somehow inconsistent, unable to pursue neither the fast paced action of the fourth chapter, nor the survival horror spirit of the origins.

Moon Hunters is a non consistent game that wants to bravely show a different gameplay, though the intriguing potentialities of the latter were not realized as initially thought. However, it is a quite solid game, funny both in single player and in co-op mode.

It's an interesting escape room concept, but the gameplay is utterly disappointing. A waste of a good idea.
