Critic Reviews for The Guest

Team Gotham has crafted a stylish and mood appropriate horror game which is over all too soon.

The Guest tests an array of mental abilities throughout the three hours it lasts. But when buying into “a first-person exploration game,” you don’t expect this many plot holes.

It's an interesting escape room concept, but the gameplay is utterly disappointing. A waste of a good idea.

The Guest does drive that mansion-horror vibe quite well, but by the end, you can’t help but feel like you missed something crucial, like Leonov’s past perhaps. I’m really looking for any reason why he’d suddenly seem totes okay with being kidnapped, when the rest of the game makes it seem like he’d definitely not.

Unless willing to experience a, somewhat flawed, cult piece of adventure game history that oozes with spookiness, The 7th Guest is not really a big recommendation, especially after so many years, as it's basically a series of puzzle mini-games; mini-games that lack a "connection" to the game world, and which are of mixed quality.

If you’re in the mood for some light, undemanding puzzle solving soaked in a delicately-constructed atmosphere, The Guest can provide, but sadly it takes a lot more than that to create a rounded, satisfactory experience.

Combing simple, carefully crafted scenery as the base to hide all its secrets, this game uses its horror undertones to give every puzzle a sinister touch and to literally open doors that tell you nothing about where you are going next.

All things considered, The Guest is worth the price for an evening or two of intense mental stimulation. Each puzzle is unique and well-crafted, with several that are challenging enough for even the most experienced puzzle-solvers.
