If brainless fun is what you are looking for, look no more. Starship Troopers: Terran Command is light on strategic elements but delivers the feeling of being part of the mobile infantry, as made famous by Paul Verhoeven's movie and Robert Heinlein's novel.

Although I am convinced Red Solstice 2: Survivors will find its niche fanbase, I can't really say the hybrid action/strategy gameplay impressed me. The single-player campaign is nice to have but it doesn't stand outM the core experience here is definitely the multiplayer co-op.

7.2 / 10.0 - Paper Beast
Apr 20, 2020

Paper Beast is a fascinating migratory tale that highlights the power of collaboration and mutual help. Too bad its distinctive graphic style is brought down by terrible textures and the Sandbox mode is only the shadow of what it could have been.

7.3 / 10.0 - Myst
Dec 16, 2020

Myst is a title deeply dropped in its time. In the 1990s the concept of tutorials was almost unknown, as was the idea of a video walkthrough: at most you could find some textual guide in the reference magazines, but more often it was necessary to hope that some friends had discovered by the back ways how to solve that particularly difficult puzzle. The market wasn't inundated with the amount of video games now, and we users had a different predisposition to spend days and days trying to progress to trialand error , trying to click on every point of interest until something was unlocked. This long premise seems fundamental to me to frame the type of experience that Myst offers us, since its incipit.

7.4 / 10.0 - Ghostrunner 2
Oct 23, 2023

Fast and furious fights in a cyberpunk world, this time also on a futuristic bike exploring post-apocalyptic lands – who wouldn't love that? Too bad a few too many puzzle keep the adrenaline rush at bay and distract from the most exciting parts of the game.

7.5 / 10.0 - Shadow Warrior 3

I love Lo Wang so much. So much! He's truly the best third-grade ninja in circulation! That's why it's a shame that the combat arenas are effectively the same throughout the whole campaign.

Tempestfall is better as an adventure into the grim world of Age of Sigmar than a dual-wielding weapon, spell-casting combat game as a Stormcast Eternal. Confused? Me too.

7.5 / 10.0 - RiMS Racing
Aug 24, 2021

Incredible attention to detail, an impressive physics model and a focus on the bike maintenance make RIMS Racing a strong first entry for a new IP; however, the erratic AI and self-harming design choices reduce the overall enjoyment of the game. Also, day one DLCs are never a good look.

7.5 / 10.0 - Empires in Ruins
Apr 2, 2021

Hammer & Ravens developers have been brave and they got several good intuitions, even if the balance problems make the management component less engaging and the graphic style makes the tower defence not too sexy. The main character is a blast though.

In this chapter of Ace Combat, the gameplay is stripped down to a bare minimum and the air-to-ground combat is plain boring. The jaw-dropping graphics and production values will probably be enough to attract the fans of the franchise, but if arcade air fighting is not your niche, you'd better steer away.

7.5 / 10.0 - Tropico 6
Mar 29, 2019

Witty political satire? Check. Lovely latin music soundtrack? Check. Solid city builder gameplay? Check. Is this Tropico 6? Tropico 5? Tropico 4? Loyal Penultimo would struggle to spot the difference, and players might decide at some point to ditch El Presidente for a new one bringing some fresh air... if only there was one in sight.

Outcast Second Contact is a good remake, but not for everyone. Despite some old-school mechanics could prevent someone from enjoying the game (gunplay and matted animations are the two main defendants), Outcast is still imbued with good exploration and an entertaining plot. Give it a chance.

7.6 / 10.0 - Iron Danger
Mar 23, 2020

Of the many ingredients of Iron Danger, the combat system is for sure the best designed and comes across as fresh and interesting. I can't say the same for the RPG and narrative components though: not bad, but not excellent either.

7.6 / 10.0 - Book of Demons
Dec 17, 2018

Book of Demons has some good ideas wich often are well implemented, but in certain situations Diablo's inspiration becomes a cage a bit too narrow.

Curious League of Legends spin-off, this Hextech Mayhem. It's a simple but solid rhythm game that could use some variety to spice up the gameplay and the level design.

Although driving is super fun, the design of the career mode feels boring and samey after the first hour. Hopefully the multiplayer will be able to lend the game some more longevity.

7.7 / 10.0 - Jupiter Hell

Solid, no-nonsense roguelike with a comparatively rare sci-fi setting. Too bad it doesn't deliver the badass power fantasy that its inspiring material source (Doom) does so well.

A light and entertaining alternative to heavy-weight shooters like Raw Data and In Death, The Wizards gives the player great satisfaction in creating spells with their own hands, and that's simply amazing.

7.8 / 10.0 - Pharaoh: A New Era
Feb 15, 2023

The original Pharaoh came in 1999 towards the end of a generation of city builders. In 2023, Dotemu's Pharaoh: a New Era retains the classic gameplay, but the lack of innovation weighs more than ever as it competes with a new generation of games in the same genre.

A new Serious Sam game! And guess what? You get exactly what you'd expect! Siberian Mayhem is a mindless fragfest that does not overstay its welcome. Just a shame that graphics also seems to be coming from 10 years ago.
