Critic Reviews for SEGA AGES Herzog Zwei

Even if RTS titles aren't your cup of tea, we highly recommend you give this one a whirl because, outside of spiritual successor AirMech, there really hasn't been a game quite like this since.

It's mind-blowing that Herzog Zwei released over 3 decades ago as it holds up as an incredible real-time strategy game and playing it made me wish there was a modern remake that smoothed out its more dated aspects. I look forward to the announcement, Sega!

With Herzog Zwei, the SEGA AGES line comes to an end. It's a worthy and appropriate send-off, since it represents what the series is all about: recognizing, preserving, and enhancing older, often overlooked SEGA titles.

Herzog Zwei was a great conclusion to the Sega Ages line, cramming as much references and bonus stuff as I could have possibly wanted in such a release, and truly feeling like a proper sendoff. As one of my first RTS games, this was a really fun introduction to the genre, and the helper and tutorial modes do a great job of making this a customizable experience for newcomers and veterans alike!

SEGA AGES Herzog Zwei closes this SEGA AGES series for now. A little gem from Technosoft that served as inspiration for today's real-time strategy and its MOBA side, now recovered and revamped with a new online multiplayer and an indispensable tutorial that will help us get much more out of the game.

M2 and Sega have done a bang-up job of refining this classic for the SEGA AGES line, and though this is apparently the final release in the series, I think it is a great game to end on. If you have a Genesis and a Switch but aren’t too keen on spending 90 USD or more on a copy, I’d consider this release. If you have a 16-bit RTS itch that needs to be scratched, you will be very satisfied with Herzog Zwei.

Herzog Zwei is a hard to get into but still a very playable classic that was fundamental in paving the way to modern RTSs; and it’s one hell of a way to close off the Sega Ages collection.
