It’s a real shame that I couldn’t find much to enjoy here, since there’s a good amount of potential here, but you’d think with such a fun theme and the mechanics at play, there’d be so much more life in this game. Maybe I went in with too high of expectations, maybe I wasn’t the target audience, but between the monotonous music that I eventually muted and the gameplay loop that tires itself out long before the cake’s done cooking, I really want to like this game more, but, to be honest, I can’t say I’m thrilled about playing this anymore. If you’ve played Super Mario and Donkey Kong, you’ve been here before. If you don’t mind that and just want some solid platforming to kill five or so hours, it’s harmless enough that I’d say go for it if it’s on sale. But otherwise, it’s reshades of the same thing, and this game doesn’t dare to tread much farther than those before it.

Super Perils of Baking is a fun and family-friendly 2D platformer that can provide hours of enjoyment. It doesn’t do anything new really but it borrows ideas from many platformer greats to create a fun experience of its own. Even if you played the original game back in 2018, I recommend playing this one too as the team did a great job improving the look and adding enough new content to sink your teeth into.

While Super Perils of Baking can feel a tad too generic at times, then, is has to lot to offer for its modest price. It evokes the spirit of 90s platformers that were never as popular as the big hitters – games like Zool, Cool Spot and Boogerman. And so for those who yearn for a new platforming experience that relishes in that old-school feel, it’ll go down a storm. Perhaps the worst thing about it is its soundtrack, but that can be easily remedied. Ultimately, it will never be remembered as a classic, but Super Perils of Baking can at least remind you of the golden days of the genre.

Super Perils of Baking is a 16 bit, 2D side scrolling platformer and an ode to the retro game genre in terms of variety, difficulty and platformer peril. It’s jam packed with things to do and collect but you’ll need a sprinkling of rage induced dopamine to get you through the enemies, highs and lows. There’s hours of fun that’s certainly worth your time, especially for the price point.

Super Perils of Baking nails its theme, but a few small nuggets aren’t enough to prevent it feeling like a run of the mill platformer. Achievement hunters and completionists will benefit the most from this one.

Super Perils of Baking is a tough and rewarding 2D platformer that will challenge you every step of the way. The beautiful 16-bit visuals, catchy soundtrack and tight platforming are all wrapped up in a superb price point. Highly recommended.
