Shuyan Saga Reviews
Back in 2017, Shuyan Saga was probably a decent mobile game. It has a competent, if not very original, narrative and the graphic novel is broken up by real-time kung fu fighting. In 2023 and on bleeding edge consoles, Shuyan Saga feels out of place and unlikely to satisfy gamers used to more elaborate productions and nuanced mechanics.
I would have loved to score this game far higher, but the delicate balance of storytelling and gameplay is just not there. The storytelling and artwork are what massively carry the points I've scored for this title because in my opinion far more effort needed to be put into making compellingly fleshed-out beat-em-up sections as this game should have been absolutely incredible.
Mixing together some decent story beats with choices to be made and some fighting it’s at least novel, but it lacks real depth
this is the way I want to play visual novel games from now on, This game is so close to nailing it 100 percent but it just needs a bit of tweaking. I am very excited to see what they do next.
Shuyan Saga was a revelation for me having not previously been on my radar. While its combat is fairly rudimentary, it is its epic storytelling, deep lore and compelling characters who are excellently voice acted that make this journey truly worthwhile. I was left wanting more as I was totally hooked by the epic saga.
