Akiba Lost is a great comedy, but a horridly executed conspiracy thriller. Many design choices feel like they were added to make the game marketable rather than improve its quality. The 428 gameplay structure will draw in fans of that title. Setting the story in Akihabara will pull in anime and video game fans, and making it live action will get people who don't like anime visual novels to try it. Making it a mystery seems obvious, since it is the most popular VN genre. It is a long line of safe marketing choices. Still, it pulls focus from what is actually good in Akiba Lost: the comedy and the endearing, but less marketable, supporting cast.
