Critic Reviews for Level 22: Gary's Misadventures

Despite some clunky controls and some glitches, Level 22 is an fun stealth game that adds some quirkiness to a genre that can feel stale at times. It's just the right length to avoid overstaying its welcome, and humorous aspects help the player see past what - at the end of the day - is a fairly elementary, albeit relatable, story.

Level 22: Gary's Misadventure is a pleasant and refreshing stealth focused game. Not once did it take itself too seriously, or try too hard. Its light-hearted approach to the genre felt like light relief when compared to games like Volume or Metal Gear Solid. Go Gary, go!

Level 22: Gary's Misadventures is a delightful twist on a genre that can take itself way too seriously at times. It manages to make fun of how ridiculous stealth games can be, and provides a solid challenge itself even if it doesn't last that long.

A good scripting and some humour aren't enough.

Level 22 brings an original concept implemented through interesting mechanics. Its visual environment is comical and overall appealing to the eye, but its musical counterpart falls behind expectations. While Level 22 is entertaining it's not free from falling into a pattern of repetition.

All in all, Level 22 is a very worthwhile purchase if you are in the market for a top down stealth game. It is loaded with charm and has some well designed gameplay. It's not perfect – what game is? – but many will find a lot to enjoy from Level 22. You might be one of them. Just don't stay up too late playing, or your boss could get mad.

[Level 22] often takes a bit of trial and error, having to make several mistakes  before you find the right solution – but you will have a lot of fun doing so

Level 22: Gary's Misadventures is a lot of different extremes, if the good to bad spectrum is a tangible thing. With a controller, all of the movement issues are completed resolved. The art work is absolutely stunning, even for a retro-styled title, and the music is impressive, yet wears thin after a while. As it stands, Level 22 is almost a casual game trying to be more. While the stealth components are inventive, there's just not enough to save the whole experience from being too cumbersome to be enjoyable through the whole of the experience.
