Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered updates the FPS classic admirably, but its pricing scheme and missing maps keep it from reaching its true potential.

It’s still excellently well-paced and doesn’t linger in one spot for too long, wedging various set pieces between the usual corridor shootouts.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is a remaster done right. Unfortunately it lacks content at launch with just 10 multiplayer maps, and the game being tied to the special edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare doesn't really help much in this case.

Ultimately, Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered might be the best remaster I’ve ever played. Everything is updated and beautiful, without losing a single thing long-time fans loved about the original. If you’ve ever wanted to see where the online multiplayer craze started, this is it – and it holds up amazingly well.

When Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare released in 2007, it became an instant classic. Now in 2016 we have Modern Warfare Remastered and it’s arguably the best remaster I’ve played, it’s just a shame that it’s currently not available as a standalone purchase.

While the game hasn’t aged very well in the years, and the ideas seen here are considered “old hat”, it remains a highly engaging experience that even if you’ve seen it all and know all its twists and turns. The updates to the game cannot be understated. However, it is packaged with Infinite Warfare through a premium purchase that having a simultaneous release of two Infinity Warfare games introduces a lot of choice that players will have to make. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare still remains best-in-show all these years later, and is a rebuilt masterpiece that’s worth experiencing again.

Nine years on and Modern Warfare still feels as fresh and vital as ever. As an exercise in nostalgia it's a raging success and Raven Software should be applauded for doing such a solid job of updating a timeless classic without losing the essence of what made it so great the first time around. Whether Activision continues on a futuristic path with upcoming chapters in the franchise remains to be seen, but the fact that more people were excited at the prospect of revisiting this than jumping into Infinite Warfare's multiplayer should at least be an indicator that it might be time for a change.

Even after nine years and the countless sequels that have come after it, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered shows how good the original game was. The campaign is short but so packed with memorable moments that few would mind some of the residual issues. If you can deal with the addition of cosmetics to appease players who have only come to the series recently, you'll be happy with how the original tenets of the multiplayer portion, from movement to gun balance and map layout, have remained unchanged. It really is too bad that this game won't be divorced from more expensive versions of Infinite Warfare for the foreseeable future, but if you're already committed to spend the extra money, you won't be disappointed.

A lot of people were disappointed that the only way to get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered last year was to buy the Legacy Edition of Infinite Warfare, but now it is finally available as a standalone. Everything you love about the original is here with much more visual clarity and better performance, as well as a few new multiplayer additions from future entries, making it an excellent stopgap this summer ahead of Call of Duty: WWII.
