Super Stardust Ultra VR does everything that had made the series work before and expands on it with a new cockpit view.

The new mode is unnecessary and strips away the very elements of gameplay that make Super Stardust so good in the first place.

While I’m not interested in drawing a value assessment of the overall package, rest assured that Super Stardust addicts like myself will not be disappointed with this purchase. Just know that if you weren’t a fan of previous installments, this will not be changing your opinion. Beware: your mileage may vary.

Super Stardust will always be an outstanding arcade game, but this particular version is a tired attempt at repurposing an ageing experience for yet another PlayStation platform. The classic gameplay options function fine in virtual reality but offer nothing new, while the added PlayStation VR-exclusive Invasion Mode fails to grasp what's great about the original experience. It's one of those launch games that's just kinda… there.

Unlike its top-down forefather, it's bland, slow, ugly, and may invoke nausea in some. The head aiming system works well at least, but overall it's the definition of unnecessary.

The classic game mode are not improven by the VR headset, and the loss of definition is really hard to bear. The Invasion Mode, the sole new feature of the package, is short and uninspired.

The root game of Super Stardust Ultra VR is everything you remember, with a new (albeit small) twist. The new Invasion mode, on the other hand, is a shallow nausea-inducing horde mode that does little to elevate the game. If you are looking for the VR game to showcase your new headset, save yourself the literal headache and skip this one.

Super Stardust Ultra VR brings a luke warm side dish that was nuked in the microwave to the table.

In conclusion, Super Stardust Ultra VR transforms the previous game and gives the player a cockpit view that has been built especially for virtual reality. Although this mode does work, I did find the graphics a little dated and at times, a little jarring, especially the non-cockpit game modes. Nonetheless, it’s still an interesting and at times fun experience on the PlayStation VR but given the launch titles, it is on the weaker side but for under $30AUD (November 2016), it’s not bad!
