Despite a handful of malfunctioning NPC's, some flat voice work and the same awkward vehicle controls as always, it's easily the best family game of 2017. If you're looking for a game to keep your little heroes entertained this Christmas, look no further than LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2.

It's all become a bit "paint by numbers" with LEGO styled games, but what's on offer in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is enjoyable. There's plenty of content and Marvel fans young and old will no doubt enjoy it.

While definitely a bit of a letdown after how good the first game was, there is still plenty to enjoy in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. If the first chapter of the series showed serious plot-level uncertainties, the same can not be said for this new title. Controllable heroes are all done very well. Each hero has his or her own skill that will be crucial to the continuation of the story or to the resolution of the challenges within the various levels of play.

Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 doesn't change the gameplay formula too much, but adds a massive open world to explore and tons of characters to unlock and use. The story and humor add to the fun.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 feels like the solid end of TT Games' exploration of the Marvel Universe. There's more characters here and this mashup of worlds provides a good deal of variety. There are problems: the X-Men and Fantastic Four don't return from the first game, the voice cast drains characters of some of their charm, and with this many characters, things can get a little confusing. The Lego game formula might need a rebuild in the future, but Lego Marvel 2 is good victory lap for the series.

While the villain ends up being pretty forgettable, Chronopolis gives you an amazing playground as cities and universes collide. Inhumans alongside 2099 Spidey? and Wild West Captain America? Check!

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2’s exploration and cheery disposition, the beauty of the animation and its embracing of Marvel’s wackier moments, more than outshines these moments of despair.
