Critic Reviews for Reigns: Kings and Queens
While its short-burst gameplay is perfectly suited to phones, Reigns: Kings & Queens arguably works just as well lying on the sofa with a single Joy-Con. It's addictive with plenty of depth to its deceptively simple systems, although like the mobile edition, it really is best enjoyed when played in small chunks. After several hours, repetition inevitably dulls its initial appeal, but if you haven't played it elsewhere, this is a great package that's well worth swiping right on.
Elegant in its simplicity, Reigns: Kings and Queens offers you all the different flavours that power comes in and is brutally easy to get lost in.
Reigns: Kings and Queens certainly is a unique type of game on Nintendo Switch. Its minimalist art style looks great on the TV and on the console's screen when in portable or tabletop mode. The humor is also fun and charming, and it will make you chuckle every now and then. If you're looking for something different, then be sure to check out this one on Nintendo Switch since it includes Reigns and Reigns: Her Majesty in a single package.
While the repetition of decisions can slow the fun at times, the quest system gives you something to constantly be trying to figure out. The story goes to enough offbeat places and as long as you're progressing through the quests, adds in enough small bits of gameplay to stay fresh. Reigns is much more experiential than gamey, but it's an experience worth checking out.
If you're looking for a fun and minimalist strategy game to play at home or on the go, in which every time you die you at least make some progress and push the game forward, then you should check out Reigns: Kings and Queens. Gameplay mechanics are very easy to understand, the art style is charming, and the weird scenarios you'll need to solve will keep you coming back for more.
Despite the obtuseness of its gameplay, Reigns is a game full of interesting design choices that intermingle narrative and gameplay to create something you'll be thinking about for weeks on end. This is a deceptively deep game you'd be happy to keep coming back to. It is novel, with high production values, and there's bound to be some aspect of this game that will have you hooked.
If you’re looking for something full of thrills and excitement that you can play for hours upon end REIGNS will disappoint you. If, however, you’re looking for something pretty light and fun with an average play session lasting less than 10 minutes (sometimes much less) REIGNS is absolutely a terrific option. With enough humor, variety, and surprises to last you some time it may not have the appearance of a game with great depth but after just a few runthroughs you’ll likely see the brilliance that helps make it interesting and unique on Switch.
