It’s a busy week and this seemed to come out of nowhere, but don’t sleep on Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch. It’s an absolute cracker on the handheld’s ever-growing library.

Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition is an impressive achievement, but glaring omissions prevent it from being anything close to a definitive version, and it’s disappointing that games from previous generations are still being ported to the Switch in an incomplete condition. That being said, if you want a unique, single-player FPS which runs really well in handheld mode and you’re not interested in challenge maps or multiplayer you will most likely have a great time. I’m giving Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition the Thumb Culture Silver Award.

I didn’t expect to enjoy Bulletstorm as much as I did, but it’s truly a charming FPS even if it’s crude and boorish. The gameplay provides an immense amount of enjoyment with different mechanics scattered about to constantly bring something interesting to the table. The Skillshot system is one of the greatest additions to an FPS I’ve ever seen and made me want to try and experiment with ways to kill enemies. For some the story may be a bit too over the top and lack enough personality to interest you. The lack of gyro controls and online multiplayer may also put off some players from trying Bulletstorm. However, I have to say that if you’ve been craving a new FPS to take on the go, this one is definitely worth checking out.

Bulletstorm lives and dies on its campaign and the Switch version has absolutely smashed it out of the park. It’s a crying shame the planned sequel was cancelled due to the poor sales of the original release possibly in relation to launching so close to Gears of War which was considerably more successful. The madness of this game warrants a second outing, the tremendous Skillshot system still unrivalled to this day.

With a fairly competent graphic section -although not exempt from a lack of stability in certain situations-, accompanied by all the sense of humour Duke Nukem can add, and tons of action, this version of Bulletstorm becomes very entertaining. However, if you've played the original, the additions may not be enough to justify your purchase.

Oh Bulletstorm, you were a title that I don't think ever got quite a fair shake back when it was released...

Bulletstorm: Duke for Switch Edition lands on the Nintendo Switch as a humorous, visceral and fun FPS, with a creative system that pushes the player towards using their mind in a way as twisted and outrageous as possible when it comes to eliminating enemies. While the game could certainly feature a multiplayer component, this edition of Bulletstorm for the Switch has enough assets to make itself a good option for some intense, comedic, morbid action.

Yes, it’s missing its multiplayer component here and we’d love to see gyroscopic controls patched in pretty sharpish, but overall this is a technically top-notch port of a stellar first-person shooter that you should really check out – especially if you missed out on it the first time around.

All this is very disappointing, as the game itself is still great - with fun gameplay, cool locations, huge opponents and spectacular story events. If you prefer to play in portable mode, you can try.
