Since its launch, Dune: Awakening has experienced a significant decline in player numbers. Cheaters, griefers, and a lack of content have all been cited by players as reasons for leaving, with peak player counts sitting around 86 percent down on where they were at launch.
Two new expansions, announced during Gamescom week, will usher in the game's next chapter, alongside its first DLC, The Lost Harvest, and are likely to help revitalize the game.
It doesn't seem like the team at Funcom has any plans to slow down either, as, speaking to TheGamer at Gamescom, Funcom’s chief product officer and executive producer, Scott Junior, shared that the team is sticking to a ten-year plan it started with, which will potentially take players off Arrakis in the future.
During our chat at Gamescom, Junior told me that the team isn't concerned about Dune: Awakening's current player numbers. "It’s okay if players aren’t playing 24/7. Even if they take a month or two break, that’s fine," he says. "We want them to enjoy the game they’re playing, and we want to meet their expectations."
