After releasing the hugely successful Baldur's Gate 3 two years ago, Larian Studios returned at last night's The Game Awards to announce its next project: Divinity.
Before Baldur's Gate 3 became the biggest game of 2023, Larian was primarily known for the Divinity series. Beginning with Divine Divinity in 2002, the series gained mainstream recognition with the release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2017.
Now, with far more resources and name recognition following the success of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian has returned to its beloved fantasy role-playing series. The name Divinity suggests a reboot of sorts, but fans are convinced the series' lore up to this point will be relevant in the upcoming game.
Divinity was announced with a lengthy, cinematic trailer that displayed some pretty dark themes. We see townspeople burning an unwilling sacrifice during a folk festival: we see merriment, joy and sex accompanying the screaming of a man whose flesh is melting from his bones. As the sacrifice continues, revelry turns to screams as corruption begins to spew forth from the body of the burned man, quickly overtaking the land.
