Dishonored Was A Compromise Between Its Creators, Who Couldn't Decide Between Blade Runner And Thief

Dishonored was a collaboration between Raphaël Colantonio and Harvey Smith, the game's two co-directors who formed a natural partnership at Arkane, a studio both have since departed.

Recently, the two got together to play the original Dishonored while providing anecdotes about the game's development; a sort of informal developer commentary on the beloved immersive sim.

Interestingly, as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, Dishonored was actually a compromise between the pair's respective dream projects. After being approached by Bethesda, Colantonio was extremely interested in developing Thief 4, while Smith really wanted to make a Blade Runner game.

"There was a little bit of competition in a way, because even though we wanted what was best for the company, at the end of the day, I would have been devastated if it was Blade Runner," Colantonio said. "Because it [would have] meant that I was not directing it, and also because it [would have] meant that I [didn't] care so much for it as I care for Thief and vice versa [for Smith]."
