Destiny 2 has been embroiled in a media firestorm after Bungie announced last week that support would end with one final update on June 9.
Bloomberg reported in the ensuing days that Destiny 3 had not been green lit due to how expensive development would be, upward of $500 million. Bungie has allegedly pitched other Destiny projects to Sony, but none have been approved, and for now, it appears that the franchise is on ice.
According to Forbes, discussions about Destiny 2's future began after the Edge of Fate and Renegades chapters in 2025 fell short of expectations, making it abundantly clear that interest in the game was fading — something that was reflected in the diminishing concurrent peak player counts on Steam.
One idea to reinvigorate the community was to relaunch Destiny 2 as "Destiny Infinity," abandoning the two expansion model and returning to larger annual expansions. With a foundation to build from, much like with Overwatch 2 and Counter-Strike 2, a relaunch would be a less expensive endeavor than a full-blown sequel, but unfortunately, even this was deemed too costly.
