Trillion: God of Destruction has wonderful characterization and compelling moments, but gets bogged down in a series of unintuitive design decisions and a lack of engaging main story content. Come for the concept, but don’t be surprised when it doesn’t hold for long.
Combining the familiar elements from the Legend of Zelda with the simplistic hack-and-slash gameplay found in Dynasty Warriors makes Hyrule Warriors Legends a great game for quick bursts of pick-up-and-play, that also offers a rich storyline that handles the source material with a noticeable level of honor and respect. Whether you’re a Zelda fan or a Dynasty Warriors gamer there’s a lot to be happy about in this mash-up title.
When The Division fires on all cylinders, it's really something; a solid loot-shooter, with engaging mechanics and the perfect set-up for co-op online. What bogs it down, between a lack of variety and a mix of technical hitches, keeps it from reaching those heights. For now, it's a serviceable squad-based shooter effective at eating up a couple hours a night with friends.
Pokkén Tournament retains the spirit and charm of Pokémon, while still a fun fighter that excellently caters to all skill levels.
A gorgeous world that feels truly alive, Black Desert Online is a solid entry into the sandbox subgenre of MMOs. Benefiting from having been launched in a major market for a year before coming to the West, it offers an open world to explore, and an especially deep tradeskill and trading system mixed with an action-oriented combat scheme.
Disgaea 4 is charming and light-hearted with a fun battle system with depth that is less on the surface than some might be looking for. If you’ve never played it before, the price and content packed in make the Vita version the right choice for those looking to try it out.
Wow. I haven’t enjoyed a game as much as I am enjoying Tales of Hearts R in a long, long time. It has all of the classic elements of RPG gaming that the genre’s fans love, and an incredible battle system that stands high as a possible industry standard. The story is more than passable and the world is a large one, rife with discovery and exploration. There is nothing to not like about Tales of Hearts R, so I didn’t want to complicate the matter by rating it “appropriately” due to its being like so many games from before. This game is absolutely great, and everyone who loves RPG games should play it, without hesitancy. I hope that young gamers find this game at their local retailer and take a chance on it. Everyone should have the pleasure of enjoying this game. Without a doubt, this game deserves to be recognized for what it is: an absolute masterpiece.
Lost Dimension is a unique, innovative RPG that can pride itself on fantastic characters and an engaging combat system. While the narrative isn’t fantastic, the NG+ features and intricate Gift skills will likely have you coming back for seconds. A fantastic addition to the Vita library.
Hitman tries an interesting balance of stuffing a lot into a little, but doesn't exactly pull it off with elegance. While levels are large sandboxes containing numerous death-fulfilling opportunities, they come with the extra baggage of lackluster technical performance. Without the option of going to different locations of an equal size, Hitman currently feels like a product that lacks in its offering once enemy patterns and building layouts have been memorized.
Witch and the Hundred Knight: Revival Edition is a new opportunity to own a modern JRPG classic. While its new features are largely standard fare, its real value is its preservation of what made the original great without being diluted to fit the taste of a different audience. If you were a fan of the original but sacrificed it for a more current platform, or just want a chance to own a title that snuck past you the last console generation, this a great chance to bolster your collection and indulge in a truly unique experience.
Though it may look like nothing special on the surface, DISTRAINT is a worthwhile adventure game about the toll greed can take. Horror imagery is used to display the main character's all-consuming guilt, and the smart sound design amplifies it perfectly. While the story isn't especially long, it's absorbing and gives you a lot to think about.
Superhot is short but full of style and substance, taking an inventive mechanic to its furthest and providing a unique shooter experience. The current offering is slim, but unlike anything else around.
Project X-Zone 2 is a dream crossover on paper that falters in execution, failing to excel in any area beyond unabashed novelty. The quality of the cast and engaging juggling mechanic are the most you'll likely get out of this crossover RPG.
Pokemon X & Y set a new standard for Pokemon games to come. The advances in this game are well worth the $40, and if you’re interested in the online aspect, I’m happy to say that it is booming and has hours of entertainment to offer. It has improve upon the series in almost every way, so if you’re a fan who has been dragging your feet to buy X or Y, because they’ve been waiting for one of the games to finally break the monotony and change the series in some major ways, then this is the game you’ve been waiting for. There has never been a better time to set out on the never-ending quest to Catch ‘Em All.
If you enjoy putting together model planes, then SimplePlanes is for you. The build mode presents you with seemingly endless possibilities, or you can sample from vehicles the community has created. When it comes to the simulation aspect of this aircraft simulator, it brings nothing new to the table.
Wondershot succeeds at being an entertaining party game, but is too easy to master, and best played in small doses.
Dying Light: The Following takes a gaming great and gives you the ability to drive a buggy over zombie piles on top of it all. A true expansion, The Following provides players with an all new area of Harran to explore, new game features and items, and the ability to drive a vehicle and level your skills as a driver and a runner. Even with a fairly high number of issues and drawbacks, the quality is far and above anything negative the expansion carries with it. A drastic departure from the original that manages to maintain all of the charm and character that makes Dying Light a flickering flame worth protecting, The Following is a must own for all.
Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is not for everyone, but to its credit it doesn't try to be. This game shines with pride knowing it gave it's all to celebrate fans of the Naruto Shippuden anime and doesn't look back. At its worst Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is just as good as any of its predecessors and at its best it only made things better. It's functional, fun, and crammed full of enough different modes to satisfy anyone interested in giving it chance. Anything beyond that is just a matter of taste, but if you're even bothering to wonder about a Naruto tie-in video game, that really shouldn't be much of an obstacle.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is a fantastic gameplay experience that shows no signs of age, despite an underwhelming visual upgrade.
Megadimension Neptunia VII is a story about a girl in a very strange world, but that world happens to be a apocalyptic bizarro dimension inside of a video game console. The game manages to be fun with only a limited amount of improvement. Continuing with its signature game within a game concept, Megadimension Neptunia VII is going to please fans and not do much to change the minds of detractors. Very similar to the past titles in the series, this game is tried and true because Neptune never changes.
