It's clear that Gat out of Hell is purely fan service. If you liked the lunacy of Saints Row IV, you'll find more of it here. While it isn't bringing a great deal of new to the table, that doesn't prevent it from being a fun ride while it lasts.
Resident Evil HD is the definitive way to experience the forefather of the survival horror genre. There may be some elements that are frustratingly outdated but the game is still terrifying and plenty of fun to play.
Funk of the Titans is a game with its heart in the right place, but repetitively boring gameplay and QTE's keep the charm from winning out in the end.
In the end The Dark Below has some great ideas and adds to an already solid game, but what it adds does not seem to be worth 20 dollars. It is unfortunate that a game with such great gameplay is hindered by its own weight and becomes diluted by its own ambitions. The lack of new content is inexcusable and it will be interesting to see how well it holds up until the next expansion, House of Wolves.
The Crew is a game filled with missed opportunities and unfulfilled potential. The promises hammered upon during development fell short in almost every way, with the exception of the car creation. On top of that, the story found within The Crew is embarrassing and provides more laughs than it does drama. Ubisoft took a huge swing and missed by a car length, it is time for them to put The Crew back in the garage for an overhaul.
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris's new mechanics and graphical improvements make it a must-have for any couch co-op fan. The devious puzzles are matched by a better story and bigger bosses, making for a fun four-player romp that should keep any gamer entertained.
The WWE 2K series has experienced a very rough transition to the "next generation" of consoles. After two straight years of solid releases in WWE 13 and 2K14, Yukes has hit a wall. As it is in wrestling, when you hit a wall, you have to figure out what to do next. One thing is clear, this series has taken a large step in the wrong direction. A character change may be required in order to get this series back on track.
LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is a worth addition to the LEGO Batman series, but while all that is good about these games has returned, all of the glaring issues with the series are worse than ever.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a fun puzzle-platformer with a huge amount of polish. The camera angles can sometimes get in the way of its greatness, but Toad's first solo adventure is absolutely a memorable one.
In the end, Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS is phenomenal. Let any doubts about a handheld version of this game be put to rest- Super Smash Bros. 3DS pulls no punches and stands proud with its console predecessors.
Rollers of the Realm is just as good as when I first encountered it at this year's E3. It's an enormously fun and creative take on two genres you would never think to see in bed together. The gameplay is tight and responsive, the boards are intricate and clever, and the splendid voice acting is an added delight. Rollers is in nearly every way more than you'd expect from a typical pinball game. At just $9.99, this a great holiday buy if you're looking for a digital stocking stuffer or just want something fun and new.
Warlords of Draenor is the pinnacle of a game we've been playing for over 10 years now. It's absolutely the most polished version, with stunningly beautiful world design and a wonderful soundtrack that will fill you with awe during the course of your adventure. While I do yearn for more soul in the quest stories, the phenomenal scripted sequences and cutscenes are more than a fair tradeoff. Those who play the game for the sport will likely enjoy the Warlords content, from what I've seen so far in the pre-raid dungeons and PVP the design caliber is as high as ever. If you've been looking for a reason to be excited about World of Warcraft again, this is certainly it.
Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U exemplifies the best the console —heck, Nintendo itself- has to offer. The overall experience has a trim and polish that is exceptional even by Nintendo's standards, and while there are a few nitpicks that longtime fans of the series might find, it's hard to argue against this being the best game in the series to date. There's never been a better reason to invite a room full of people over to your house.
There was heavy skepticism arising when it comes to Ubisoft Montreal being able to top Far Cry 3. Not only was Far Cry 3 a very impressive game with excellent gameplay, it was not even two years ago when it hit store shelves. Despite that, Far Cry 4 tops Far Cry 3 in every single way imaginable. While the story is still not as silly nor as intriguing as it should be, the unpredictable nature of the gameplay continues to leave it as one of the most enjoyable experiences out there. There is a certain magic to riding an elephant, a certain magic that no other game but Far Cry 4 can achieve.
We had a lot of praise for Rocksmith 2014 on previous gen, and it's transition to new platforms has only improved on that. At least in my household it remains a fantastic family event that yields a real skill. Who said videogames never taught you anything?
This War of Mine is one of the most emotionally investing games I've played in years, and it doesn't need a complex set of gameplay systems to be what it is… a great game, and a deep piece of art on the horrors of war. A depiction of things so cruel and of life so horrible that you couldn't imagine these things actually happening, even if you know they do.
While Persona Q's story may be meaningless on its own, the dungeon crawling and strategic battle system are great challenges with an excellent cast to keep you company.
LittleBigPlanet 3 is a worthy successor to the LBP series and a solid continuation of what made the first and second games such a hit with critics and gamers alike. But even with its new content, including three unique and playable characters, new story missions and updated 1080p graphics, I was left underwhelmed and wishing for more innovation. It's a great game, but it failed to meet my tremendous expectations first generated from the wildly entertaining and innovative original.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is a good remake, but new features and graphical updates make it a hard sell for those who have already invested many hours in the originals.
While the narrative leaves a bit to be desired, Grand Theft Auto V on the PlayStation 4 is a technical marvel, a masterclass in world building, and absolutely worth exploring again.
