The Game Fanatics's Reviews

Oct 9, 2014

If you like the idea of taking one of Nintendo's hottest fighting game franchises with you on the go, then this game will do you good. Otherwise, wait on the Wii-U version. Circle pad movement takes some getting used to and can get bothersome if you're used to playing hard and precise. Online mode shatters the game's replay potential.

Peril on Gorgon is definitely worth the play in a quarantine scenario. A great addition to Outer Worlds' content but ultimately nothing thematically ground-breaking.

6.7 / 10.0 - Darksiders III
Dec 7, 2018

Darksiders III still has some entertainment hidden behind all of its cut corners, but it is buried under the obvious signs of a strained and troubled production.

It isn't that Fallout 4: Automatron is short. If this was two/three very engaging hours, instead of 30-45 very good minutes following a thin first two thirds, it would be a different story. Those willing to create a new character will gain extra fulfillment, and the robot creation system is good fun, but Automatron feels like a scrap metal junkbot instead of a stand-alone, well-oiled machine.

6.7 / 10.0 - The Deer God

The Deer God is visually stunning and creates a great environment but the game play has some bugs and isn't that engaging.

6.7 / 10.0 - Mighty No. 9
Jul 11, 2016

Mighty No. 9 struggles to capture the magic of the better Mega Man games, but offers a decent enough experience. The game's bad pacing and overall lack of polish warrants a single play through that will probably be soon forgotten. The game has loads of potential, but doesn't really live up to it.

Yeah, Hitman is back with a more stealth-balanced system, but this being an episodic experience seems to have IO Interactive stuck now without a real story or reason for players to come back. Still, there is fun to be had in the various killing approaches and Agent 47's slightly different approach to acquiring said opportunities.

Dark Room brings out the darkness in Arcadia Bay, but fails to continue one of the best parts of Life is Strange.

Mind: Path to Thalamus, is a successful and prevalent piece of work. It bridges a gap between entertainment, gaming and art. It beholds an exhilarating and emotional experience. It challenges your mind without holding your hand and guiding you too blatantly. The rewards are personal, as a player you feel a real sense of accomplishment. The game is marred in some respects, but other than this, Mind: Path to Thalamus is a must have title for any serious gamer.

While this episode is certainly worth the effort, chugging through buggy sections with long loading screens puts the grinding brake pads to a lot of series enthusiasm.

6.8 / 10.0 - Those Who Remain
Jun 15, 2020

Those Who Remain is rough around the edges but there are a handful of standout moments that make it a journey worth taking, if you can get past those aforementioned edges.

6.8 / 10.0 - Steep
Dec 14, 2016

There is some merit to Ubisoft Annecy’s little project. When you get used to the controls–and they behave themselves–there is a lot of excitement to be had with tackling the slopes. But it’s a hollow shell of entertainment that could have used more time with UI design and a clear break from the publisher’s more recent habits. Wait for a sale if you’re craving shredding some of Steep’s digital powder, otherwise stay away.

6.8 / 10.0 - Into the Stars
May 4, 2016

Into the Stars isn't the most exciting or fast-paced game you'll ever play. It is however a decent space simulator that throws enough difficult choices your way to be worth at least a few playthroughs.

6.8 / 10.0 - Shovel Knight
Dec 19, 2014

Shovel Knight was fun for a while, but it didn't do enough to keep my interest the whole way through. A very good old school platformer that doesn't do enough to earn a place in modern gaming. If you're feeling particularly nostalgic, go ahead, otherwise you might want to play something a bit more ambitious.

Shining Resonance Refrain isn't a great game but it isn't a bad one either. I love the combat despite the repetition and the story and characters are both worth paying attention to, but it's rough around the edges. Whether it's the dated presentation, the several wholly unnecessary systems, or traversing the same areas ad nauseum, there are simply too many roadblocks for me to give it a resounding recommendation.

Assault Android Cactus has all the personality and variety of a twin-stick classic, but lets the focus fall too heavily on a single, ever-draining battery bar to match that promise.

7 / 10.0 - Bounty Battle

There is a lot of potential when it comes to Bounty Battle. The art is great and there are some unique gameplay mechanics. The team is continuing to improve on the game so it's worth keeping an eye on Merge Games.
