Super Volley Blast is a fun, colorful and addictive arcade-style release on PlayStation 4 that will keep you coming back to play “just one more game” over and over again. The game managed to grab my attention right from the start, and I kept playing more and more to also work on unlocking the many trophies the game has to offer, because this one has a Platinum trophy to achieve with objectives such as winning matches in Story mode, playing many matches in all of the game's modes, saving many custom avatars, playing a quick match, winning a game after your opponent scores no points, performing 100 blocks and many more. The game is worth playing with more than enough content, a full trophy list, and a reasonable price.
When deciding about whether this game is for you or not, it all comes down to one thing: if you like the first dozen or so levels, you will probably like the other 30+ stages it offers. If not, then it might be harder for you to really get into this one or you might find it a bit tedious. Kolori is certainly a good game that you can pick up and complete some levels here and there to come back to it whenever you want or can, so be sure to pick this one up for your Nintendo Switch!
Sundered: Eldritch Edition is certainly a must-have for any veteran or fan of the Metroidvania genre. It's probably not a good pick for someone who is just starting out with the genre as this one does require a high skill level to play it without getting frustrated by your own mistakes, picking the right abilities to smooth things out as you go to lower the overall challenge, which, to be fair, is not the game's fault really. We all gotta start somewhere, but if you're new to the Metroidvania genre, you should definitely get some experience under your belt before you dive into this one.
This is a game that is easy to recommend for Nintendo's hybrid console.
Phantasy Star is an RPG classic and having it available on the Nintendo Switch is certainly great news. The quality of life improvements made available in this version as part of the SEGA AGES range make it easier for those new to the franchise to get their feet wet with a rebalanced game that now also features an in-game map for each of the many dungeons you'll visit that will auto-fill as with each step you take, making it an easier sell for those that didn't get a chance to experience it back in the day. I loved playing the game at home and on the go, and I very much look forward to Sega hopefully releasing the rest of the Phantasy Star RPGs on Nintendo Switch under the SEGA AGES series.
There are 50 games to play so you'll definitely find one that is right for you, even more so if you got to play the games back in the day. Hope you enjoy it!
Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk is a solid entry in the series on the Nintendo 3DS, bringing an interesting story and fun gameplay mechanics that will keep you busy for many hours. The extra cases that are also part of this portable release are a nice bonus and a great way to extend your stay.
This is a must-have for fans of the genre, and a great option for both those who got to play it way back when as well as those new to it who are in for a treat.
Desert Child is certainly a different type of release that puts you in the shoes of a young guy who must find the balance between racing (work) and fixing his vehicle and eating (life). This release is not for everyone, but it is still enjoyable as a unique style of experience.
You've probably either played Sonic the Hedgehog back when it released on the Sega Genenis/Megadrive, but you've never played a version quite like the one available in the SEGA AGES series. The inclusion of the Mega Play from the arcade version, as well as other things such as Ring Keep mode and an online ranking leaderboard make this the most complete and definitive version of this 2D classic.
We both liked playing Battle Princess Madelyn even though we thought that there was certainly room for improvement to the game.
The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human is an interesting minimalist 2D Metroidvania that favors exploration for most of its gameplay loop while also throwing some bosses at you here and there at a steady pace. It's the right length as to not overstay its welcome, and is a game on PlayStation 4 you should check out.
Hellfront: Honeymoon is a very addictive arcade-style strategy release for one to four players that you're going to love.
Fossil Hunters fun and crazy good when played either on your own or in (local only) multiplayer – the more, the merrier! Each level lasts for as long as you want since you can stick around long after you complete a dinosaur diagram and any extra objectives, as you search for any collectibles so that you can fill up your journal. I have had a blast playing this one, and other than some mild slowdown here and there – which is not a deal-breaker – I recommend you play it today!
Quarantine Circular's sneak release was a pleasant surprise since, after playing the previous Bithell Short, I was more than up for playing a new entry in this sub-series. The characters you'll meet feel like real human (and non-human) beings, with realistic interactions and reactions that will keep you going until the end. You're looking at a couple of hours or so to finish the game, and once you're done, you can do it all over again after activating the developer commentary track to learn more about the game and its development. I had a great time playing this one, and I look forward to the next Bithell Short!
GRIP: Combat Racing on PlayStation 4 is certainly the full package with a ton of content to enjoy. I don't think the game does a good job onboarding new players, but the good thing is that you will pick things up after playing for a bit. It's a tight, fast and tense racer which is all you can ask for. Give GRIP: Combat Racing a chance to grip you!
Shift Quantum is a clever puzzle game that is very fun on PlayStation 4. The level design is great, and the core gameplay mechanic is very interesting and helps to keep you thinking outside of the box. Add the community created levels and how more and more stages are added every day, and you have a game that is definitely worth your time and money.
Spanish indie team Nomada Studio has done an outstanding job with GRIS, giving us a must-have Nintendo Switch release before the year is over.
If you want a good looking and challenging tactical game with a twist, as well as solid voice acting and an interesting story, then Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a game that is going to scratch all of those itches. I was surprised by the high quality of the game, as well as by its addictive gameplay cycle. Will you visit that extra area on the north side in hopes of finding an artifact or two to unlock some extra boosts? Or perhaps you should call it a day and go back to the Ark to level up a weapon or two so that you can deal that extra point of damage that will make a world of difference? Choose wisely!
The Forest is a solid survival game with quite impressive graphics, great music that complements the experience, and two gameplay modes so that those that are looking for a more challenging game can go right into that, while those that want a more relaxed run that can allow them to explore every corner of the world without having to worry about dying from someone or something attacking you. The game is heavy on the crafting side, and with everything, there is to find and collect in the game, as well as the many objectives you can complete, you'll spend a while playing this one before you can add a new Platinum trophy to your collection.
