Unscored - MachiaVillain
Jun 3, 2018

Overall, MachiaVillain starts off a slow burn, but once you find your nasty niche then things get really fun. With a wide variety of options to play with and explore, MachiaVillain promises more than a few hours of devilish fun.

If you want a quick pick up and put down 2D shooter and are happy to ignore the story then there’s definitely satisfaction to be found in Milanoir and although I played it on PC I feel like it would be most at home in its portable form on the Switch. You’ll get frustrated more than a few times with the controls and lack of direction but there are moments where you hit your stride in combat which can feel almost as cool as a 70’s action movie.

Digging through the history tidbits, kicking it old-school with E Honda and remembering how to do that crazy screen flashing Akuma super move are all the type of nostalgic joys that should be featured on a range of Hallmark greeting cards. Be aware though, if you don’t have that nostalgic connection then this really isn’t for you, the passage of time has probably been a little too rough for anyone without a history with the franchise to dive in here.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a fantastic old-school RPG with shiploads of deep side quests. Its flaws are easily overlooked when compared to the wonderful worldbuilding Obsidian has treated us to.

By the standards that I was forced to endure in my youth, Chamber of Time is several leagues ahead of the rest and has some delightfully enjoyable moments and some well-thought-out RPG elements to personalise your experience. By the standards of either the exploration or brawler genres today, it just passes through to warrant a look and a dabble before you get back to more immersive titles in your gaming library.

All said, while I appreciated what the game was trying to do, I only persisted in order to review it. Obscure sequences got in the way of the narrative and those loading times made everything more horrifying than intended.

Though not perfect, Detroit: Become Human is certainly Quantic Dream’s boldest attempt yet, and the refinements they’ve made make for a smoother, more enjoyable experience. Detroit is bursting with personality, full of intrigue, and exploding with emotive depth. The many mechanical and performance issues that have plagued past games have now largely evaporated allowing for you to truly immerse yourself in one of the great narrative adventures of 2018.

May 22, 2018

If some side scrolling beat-em-up action is what you are craving, then Raging Justice will provide you with what you need. It is a good looking and fun way to pass the time and take out some aggression, and if you are finding the difficulty a bit too much for yourself, you can always bring in a friend to help you pound some thugs.

With State of Decay 2, Undead Labs has realised the potential of the first game. This is very much more of the same, but that same has been polished to a blood-smeared shine.

What Spearhead has created is a piece of Storytelling art. The way the story weaves in and out through the main characters needs to be seen to be believed and this tale is backed up by rock-solid gameplay for the entirety of the game.

At the end of the day, Casey Powell Lacrosse 18is a serviceable title working with a limited budget for a niche audience. While I could call it out for many faults compared to competitors working with much larger budgets and licenses, at the end of the day I’m not the target audience. That said, for lacrosse fans both here and overseas, it really is a choice between this and, well… nothing.

By all means, buy Warmind, you will probably have a good time. But know that all you are getting is more of the same and searching for something new will only leave you unsatisfied.

“It’s hard to recommend a game like this when its gameplay seems to fall smack bang in the middle of no man’s land. It’s not that it’s a bad game or that it fails to do what it says on the box, it’s that it just doesn’t make you feel one way or the other, quite possibly one to keep an eye out for when the sales are on.”

Unscored - God of War
Apr 29, 2018

I was happy with God of War being finished, I didn’t think the world needed another game with Kratos as the lead. What I didn’t count on was this masterful reinvention coming along and proving me wrong. I have never been so happy to be wrong in my life.

Super Daryl Deluxe is one of the more unique titles available today. It takes familiar a 2D platformer and mashes it with an Action RPG while adding a dash of Metroidvania for good measure. Add to that the seriously impressive animation and art style and the game is well on its way to being a cult hit.

In all Penny Punching Princess is a promising title with a unique idea that is let down by a wonky control scheme. If the devs could somehow improve that through patching I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this as a great $20-ish title for the Switch. As it is however, the general clunkiness is likely to put just about everyone off.

Unscored - Extinction
Apr 10, 2018

Despite a promising setup and some nice enemy design Extinction fails to entertain in any meaningful matter. Once the initial thrill of taking down a giant orc wears off, the games many many frustrations take over and players are left with a mess of half-baked ideas and poor mechanics.

Burnout Paradise Remastered is a crazy and exhilarating vehicular playground. It may not be the most alive or even the largest city in gaming, but there’s an intimate and comfortable magic on display that keeps you addictively on the lookout for tell-tale yellow gates.

Unscored - Sea of Thieves
Apr 4, 2018

It remains to be seen how Sea of Thieves will grow in the future–being a live game it almost certainly will change at some point–but it’s hard not to come away feeling disappointed. Because Sea of Thieves is really a likeable, charming game that I want to see become better. It’s just not there right now.
