Had Beholder released 5 years ago, it would have been hailed as a ground-breaking title for its subversive qualities and biting commentary. As it stands, it is a solidly realised idea that unfortunately falls under the shadow of Papers, Please – a much leaner, older title that is more efficient in conveying many of the same messages.
Shadow of the Colossus is a must-play game, one that anyone unfortunate enough to have missed this title back in its day needs to play immediately. Just make sure you look out for that endgame – it’s a doozy!
There’s a general feeling that Hyper Universe could be a really good game, but it’s going to take time and investment to get there. Sadly, unless local servers become a thing (and lucky you if you have one), you’ll constantly be downed by people with better pings who can react better and win encounters more consistently.
I love that Legrand Legacy challenges itself to be something a little bit different while also reaching for a long-lost emotional connection to the games that it loved.
This underdone entrant suffers from an unreliable playing experience, a very skinny Career mode, and a nigh-on existent auditory component. AO Tennis is a game that with more time to prepare, could have been a serious championship contender but without that opportunity to refine its systems, finds itself being knocked out in the first round.
Mechanically Brawlout is rock solid and with a few patches focussed on smoothing out the touchy framerate and really rough online, it could be an experience that builds and holds an audience in the long term.
Caveman Warriors is, at its heart, a simple platform game. But it brings enough new tricks and interesting wrinkles to be worthy of your time. The multiple unique characters, wonderful art style and excellent co-op gameplay are backed up by tight controls and challenging, yet fair, levels.
Some design decisions have hampered the DOOM VFR experience, but when you’re locked in an arena with the spawn of hell coming for you, the fight for survival carries you through the experience. It’s a very familiar game but if you were a fan of the 2016 release, and you’re like me then you’ll be happy to return to the fray… just don’t have too much to eat before playing.
That was where I found that The Sims 4 sparkled – in the moments when I did nothing at all. And it almost felt insulting that the game didn’t exactly trust me to do anything. In passive view it is pristine, but the minute that I tried to do something it baffled, confuddled, and told me that I just did not have the skills to do things right.
Assassin's Creed Origins is a masterful return to form from a franchise that some had considered to be on the slippery slope towards irrelevance. One of the finest games of the year.
The whole time I was playing Payback, I was thinking “I’d be much better off just replaying Burnout Paradise or one of the Forza Horizons”, which is sad but true.
That Skyrim VR is a great experience is not in doubt. It is a wonderful way to experience this massive fantasy world. There is a little period of adjustment to get over but fighting skeletons, dancing with dragons and ignoring housecarls is a joy in VR. That said the price is a real sticking issue and one that can’t be ignored.
It has the graphical brilliance of a triple A title, but the love and meaty gameplay of an indie. It really combines the best of both worlds, and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough to anybody who thinks there’s even a chance they might enjoy it.
For dedicated fans of the series, The Fractured But Whole is an essential purchase. It greatly rewards those who have an extensive working knowledge of the past twenty years of the television show. Fortunately, it is also finely crafted enough that casual and lapsed fans who might have left the show behind but still have a fondness for it will find plenty to enjoy about it.
If you like both cricket and video games, this is a no-brainer. It may be basically the only cricket option available but it is a very good option and one that will entertain for the entire Ashes series and beyond.
Overall, High Hell is a pretty good game for… I’m not really sure. The quick, die-and-try again loop would make it perfect for Vita or Switch, but the laser-shape pinpoint targeting of your only firearm practically demands the precision of a mouse.
If you are looking for a title to scare the pants off yourself, or you love interesting game mechanics then Stifled is, without doubt, a must-buy. If you find the thought of being stuck in a claustrophobic sewer with minimal vision and some horrible hell spawn chasing you terrifying…. well let’s just say that Stifled isn’t the game for you.
Pure, distilled fun wrapped in a wonderfully colourful wrapper, Assault Android Cactus is, without doubt, a must play title.
The same tension is elicited when confronted by an imposing mechanical threat, and wonder is experienced when you round a corner and make another stunning discovery. If you’ve been looking for another reason to get back into Horizon: Zero Dawn, then you’ve got the best possible excuse right here.
“Hand of Fate 2 is everything you could want from a sequel and more. It betters the original in every way and as a result, stands at the top of the Indie pack. A must buy, no questions asked”
