Train Valley Console Edition is a challenging puzzle game with controls that make playing it on the Switch a tad frustrating. However, I’d recommend Train Valley if you like trains and enjoy a good challenge. I must admit I’d play it on PC over the Switch version. This way you might save yourself having to buy a new Switch after throwing it through the window in frustration.
Lord Winklebottom Investigates is a fantastic first solo game by the developer. So did the game live up to my expectations? Yes, it did, and I loved every minute of my investigation, even when I managed to hit a wall and get stuck for a while. The game offers everything an excellent point-and-click game should. There are many interesting characters to speak to, ingenious clues, and a good time for the player.
If you expect a visual novel with cute guys or girls and lots of romance, Long Live the Queen isn’t it. Don’t be fooled by the title image, as not all is pink and rosy. It is a novel alright, but it is a story that has you making mainly political choices. Elodie has to deal with betrayal, civil wars, assassinations, invasions, and magic… Who knew leading a kingdom could be so difficult? You can’t be a universally loved queen, you will have to make tough choices. Some will hate you, some will think you are doing okay. And all neighbouring countries try to influence you to benefit them. If you like a story where you have to build stats and have trial and error lead you to various endings, this one is for you. This is not an easy game, and if you want to reach all endings, you will have to play the same parts over and over again. There is a skip button, however I do wonder if players will be engaged enough to search for all endings. Make sure you have a notebook handy to jot down the choices you make and save often. That way, if Elodie meets a bad fate, you can still reverse it!
There are not a lot of games that give much love to the Llama but Superola Champion Edition certainly ranks at top, provided you ignore all the farming sims out there. As far as tough platformers go I really liked how Supernola takes what I usually deem as a tired gaming troupe and turns it into an experience that had me coming back for more. Somehow, mixing simple pick-up and play mechanics and offering the player flexibility to conquer the challenges ahead proved to be quite the winner. I should still caution that this game won’t suit everyone. The meme-heavy humour may take it or leave it for some players. Usually, I dislike it in games but for some reason, I was kinda cool with it here. If you’re not into these hard-scrolling platformers or constantly repeating levels I doubt this game will win you over. Superola will make you laugh and rage. But if that sounds like a good combination prepare to be entertained.
I’ve played many games with animal protagonists in my life. Most use minimalist UI and environmental storytelling to better capture the animal experience. Deer Journey follows in those footsteps, though it stumbles sometimes. It isn’t as dynamic as WolfQuest, nor does it reach the same emotional heights as Shelter 1 & 2. Instead, it wanders aimlessly (but serenely) through a rolling landscape, weaving among woodlands and sloshing across rivers. At just under an hour in length, it is a brief but pleasant experience for those hoping to escape from the cacophony of human life.
LOUD is a bit lacking when it comes to the story but strums the right notes when it comes to its gameplay and soundtrack. It’s a short experience, that’s for sure, but a pretty good one that is accessible for all gaming audiences. If you want to rock out with some good tunes while trying to aim for a high score, be sure to check out LOUD. I certainly hope the developers come back with another music game in the future because this still feels like a genre lacking in the gaming sphere. Maybe just tone the teenage angst back a little next time.
Playing this game only gave me enjoyment, with brief moments of thoughtfulness and challenging problems to solve. It kept me quite entertained and the end of each stage made me curious about the next one. It has co-op which seems like a great experience to have with a friend. I would firmly recommend accompanying Mari and Bayu on their journey and playing this game, especially if you enjoy a serene yet challenging platformer adventure with a nice story and charming aesthetics.
Super UFO Fighter is a decent pick-up and play concept that will play well for players of all skill levels. The gameplay is solid, flying around in the ships and fighting with fellow players is a hoot. But with little on offer the novelty of the experience wears off incredibly quickly. It just feels like the game could do with a bit more of everything; bigger and varied levels, more players and maybe more modes. Maybe consider purchasing this if you need a quick gaming fix with a friend when you meet at the café. But if you choose to go for this one alone, I would miss your flight.
Legends of Kingdom Rush is a pretty great pick up and play turn-based RPG. It certainly suits the phrase of easy to pick up but tricky to master. Even though failure came frequently, I had a lot of fun replaying missions and altering my tactics and making different decisions on the next attempt. I didn’t feel there was anything groundbreaking about the formula here but all the cogs and gears to the mechanics just worked well. If you’re not the biggest fan of tower defense games then this might be the title that gets you into the series. Or if you’re new to the series this is not a bad place to start. Legends of Kingdom Rush is possibly the most legendary entry in the series. If you want to try the game for yourself be sure to check out the free demo on Steam.
Krut: The Mythic Wings could have been a really fun no thrill hack and slash platformer if it just tidied up some of its gameplay designs. It kinda feels like it’s just stuck in the past and not in a good way. This is a game that might have worked if it was released in the 90s on the Mega Drive. With combat that feels more of a slog than satisfying. Horribly cheap enemies and a maddening upgrade system make for an unpleasant formula that is hard to recommend even at the low price point on offer. The game has an excellent graphical style but this is one title based on mythology that I would rather read about than play.
It took a while for Time on Frog Island to grow on me; that probably wasn’t helped by the many times I got lost when my usually good sense of direction let me down. However, I loved how the sailor is animated, the story is good, and there is no pressure in the game. I do think that if you are not a fan of fetch-type quests, the game might not be for you. But if you want a chilled game with some quirky-looking frogs, and an island to explore, give it a try.
Meet me at NooN has everything I would expect for a puzzle platformer game and even more. It was a pleasant experience, even when I did not have a single clue on how to progress. Its mechanics gives an amazing flow to the game, with time manipulation as a main focus. Its art and sound set a relaxing tone that invites you to feel comfortable. Not to forget that the challenges you deal with here will make you try many different approaches. To every player that enjoys puzzle games, time manipulation mechanics and beautifully made aesthetics, I recommend this game.
Parental note: There’s a teeny bit of violence (blood but no gore), and I recall one use of profanity (in a nickname) but nothing to sweat about for teens and, possibly, older children. Overall, Intruder in Antiquonia is a pleasant game that works, but it could have offered so much more in the story/dialogue department. For that reason, it’s hard to recommend Antiquonia over other games in the point-and-click adventure genre.
So is Sixty Words worth your time? It’s a relaxing low-stakes game that you can play after a long day. With specially crafted levels, it lacks replayability but it also doesn’t overstay its welcome. While it could have done more to stand out in an oversaturated market, it does have an undeniable human touch, courtesy of its charming themes and arrangements. Perhaps it’s a tad pricey when you can find similar games for free, but if you’re searching for a word search on Switch, then you might as well pick this one up.
This is a slightly shorter review because there isn’t much to say. This game is exactly as advertised: Matchstick puzzles for your Switch. The length is good for the price, and the design leaves nothing to be desired in my opinion. If you like this style of puzzles, then you should definitely take a look.
Snug Finder is a wholesome, sweet and enjoyable hidden object game. It would be suitable for all ages to play, from young to old. I could imagine parents and grandparents playing this game with the children. The children would spot the hidden object instantly, leaving the adults in their wake. For the price of £7.99 in the eShop, I would have liked to have more puzzles, but if you are quick, you can snap the game up as it is on sale for £1.74 | $1.99 | € 1,99
At the end of the day, I may dislike 99 Fails Lite and could think of 99 things I would rather be doing than playing it. I can’t help but still give it a recommendation. The game clearly achieves what it sets out to do. It’s simple yet devilishly tough with a surreal but certainly memorable art style. If you can drag friends into the mix I can see you creating some interesting gaming memories that may strengthen your friendship but also equally break those bonds. For some, this will click and will act as a great prologue before the main event in Autumn 2022. Try it if you dare.
Railway – Train Simulator is a brilliant pick-up and play puzzle game. It has all the right ingredients on the tracks to give you hours of enjoyment. After all, who doesn’t like to play with trains, no matter your age? So if you like your puzzle games, I recommend you try Railway – Train Simulator. Now, step aside and mind the gap, all aboard as the fun train leaves the station!
Beasties is a very casual and easy game offering little challenge that reminds me of a mobile game. While playing it for review, I kept waiting for something fantastic to happen in the game. Say, for instance, a surprise twist in the storyline or an extra area to explore as there is only one area, a forest. Sadly that never happened. I battled and caught a few beasties and visited all three stalls in the village: a beastie trainer, a blacksmith to mend your only tool and a healer. After nearly three hours of play, I finished the game and watched the credits roll. For the game’s price you don’t get much for your money, and it is over in a flash. Unfortunately, the game’s storyline also isn’t that great, and like the game itself, it ends abruptly.
For what this game is, it’s a real winner. If you like War-like card games and cute graphics, this one is for you. However, it is very much just a regular card game like you could play at the kitchen table. I think the real gold here is the ability to play online with friends. I know for a fact that my parents would love this sort of game that we could play together over the distance and chat in Discord while playing. I liked this little game a lot. And for $2.99 USD, you can buy it for yourself and all of your friends without breaking the bank.
