I really like this game. It’s a word search puzzle that’s been upgraded and modernized. What’s not to like about that? With a couple of tweaks, this game could be an amazing addition to anyone’s library. I do hope they add this game to mobile; I would be adding it to my phone as soon as it was available.

Whilst precision platforming is not quite my thing, I can appreciate when a game excels at what it’s set out to accomplish. While some stages felt a bit too tight, I never felt as though a level was impossible to clear. And given the small size of stages and ease of resetting when things aren’t going quite right, A Night at the Races is a great game to pick up and play a few stages when you want to scratch that itch. The story elements are interesting to watch unfold. Although I wouldn’t say worth getting the game solely for those moments if the platforming isn’t your thing. Overall, A Night at the Races is a solid game to dig into, especially if you love a challenge.

Move onwards, move upwards and leave nothing behind in Bonfire Peaks. A game about burning your belonging’s and starting afresh in the process of liberating yourself from your past. Bonfire Peaks is a great game for long or short play sessions.

Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers is a racer that caters to its young fan base and succeeds with some room for improvement. A few things could have been built on; more diversity in track design and offering more power-ups rather than just one per vehicle. It also seems a missed opportunity that lessons from the show are confined to the load screen rather than incorporating them further into the gameplay. If you know a young one that’s a fan of this show and loves video games then this seems like an ideal gift if you’re struggling for ideas.

Liked - Nexomon
Oct 2, 2021

I feel there’s nothing wrong when a game copies a popular gaming series, as long as they make it a worthwhile adventure. I feel the developers of Nexomon have done that. The graphics are cute and colourful, the soundtrack reminded me of the Pokémon tunes and it was a nice change to catch a different kind of Mon. Nexomon doesn’t come with all the frills and extras in gameplay that make Pokémon games amazing, but it does bring back challenging battles and a good storyline. The only serious niggle I have is the catching rate combined with the price of Nexotraps.

Residual is another winner from Orange Pixel. An intriguing survival exploration game that will keep you busy for long or short bursts of gaming. If you’re not a fan of the genre I’m not sure there is anything here to win you over. In a way, it’s fitting Apogee published this game as it kinda did bring back some of that nostalgia of that era in gaming. A game that doesn’t totally hold you by the hand, but the more you invest in it, the more you discover. What started as a stressful experience became one of wonder and intrigue. If that sounds good to you I highly recommend venturing to the stars with Residual.

It’s not going to knock your socks off, but Floating Farmer is a decent game with cute visuals and manageable difficulty. Finishing the 50 levels took me slightly under 5 hours. The difficulty is about easy to moderate for a puzzle game. I’d say the only prerequisite is to have a reasonable short-term memory! Young players should definitely try their hand at this, though they might need help with understanding how to move a tile where they want it to go. If they like Floating Farmer, who knows, they might be game for a Rubik’s Cube next! Do check out Mens Sana’s other puzzle games; the Farmer games have a similar concept and look but different mechanics.

Loved - SAMUDRA
Sep 30, 2021

SAMUDRA Is a story about hitting rock-bottom (the ocean floor) and Trip’s long laborious expedition back to the surface. It is also a story about the deep ocean and the damage pollution does to it. Which carries a warning that we all must heed if we intend to stay on this planet. You can do your bit for the environment by purchasing the game as profits from the game’s sales will partially fund a year-round collaboration with the Indonesian Environmental Activist Circle to reduce plastic usage in Indonesia by 70% in 2025.

Flewfie’s Adventure scores high in the cute factor but also serves to be a pretty decent mild space shooter. Levels are fun to explore and the puzzles nicely integrate into the shooting action. The shooting itself does become a bit grindy and dull as things progress, losing the appeal of playing this on a higher difficulty setting. The card game integration is also a nice feature but does feel like it will be hit and miss with some folk. Overall though it is a cute adventure well worth your time alone or with a friend or loved one. A game with so much cute in it should come with a warning label!

If there is nothing you can think of that’s wrong with a game except that it’s too short, then that’s probably a really good game. It’s worth the $8 USD, even with the short length. I had a lot of fun playing this short romp through a pencilled-in world, and I think anyone who likes chill meditative titles will also dig A Winding Path as well.

A Juggler’s Tale certainly ticks all my boxes as a gamer. A good story, wonderful artwork, sound effects and music. The story of a young girl taking her destiny into her own hands in a bid for freedom, it is full of empowerment and hope. It’s also about persevering and continually trying to move forward with her dreams when all else fails. I wholeheartedly recommend you play A Juggler’s Tale, and let it give your heartstrings a pull.

The collection of mystery games available on the Switch is slowly rising as the years pass. It can be very hard to find a good mystery game. A good mystery needs to hook you in. Keeps you guessing while also encouraging you to press on, and satisfy you with its ending as everything is tied together. While there can still be a few lingering questions, the major ones had better be answered. And if you are going the route of incorporating gameplay, it needs to be interactive and engaging enough. With The First Cases, this is a mystery game done very well. The storytelling is tight, doesn’t overstay its welcome, and has a nice mix of twists while also keeping everything believable.

Liked-a-lot - LoveChoice
Sep 27, 2021

LoveChoice is a delightful little anthology that I absolutely got a kick out of. It had strong stories, interesting mechanics, beautiful art and music, and some real-life truths about relationships. It also had plenty of moments that made me go “aww”. There were only a few small drawbacks in the controls and slightly awkward writing. Overall, LoveChoice is a wholesome, but honest examination of relationships. I highly recommend it!

Love Colors is a good game for those times when you don’t feel like doing difficult battles or go on an epic quest. Love Colors offers relaxing gameplay by filling the squares of a grey and white image and turning it into a bright and lovely image. Be aware there is no real gameplay in this, nonetheless, it’s very soothing to do after a very busy day. And if you want to play it together with friends or family you can do so too. Tackle the 150+ images in the base game, or go for the more intricate images in the DLC. It’ll keep you painting by numbers for quite some time.

All things considered, this is a brilliant first game from developer Playbae. It has some problems, but most of those can be ignored while platforming. The puzzle aspect of In My Shadow is solid, and the story has a lot of heart and thought in it. That being said, there were a few problems with gameplay that made some of the puzzles less enjoyable. Also, the puzzles are very difficult, which makes this game a little less accessible for those who aren’t especially good at platforming. If you plan to pick up this title, prepare for some feels.

Liked-a-lot - Gas Station Simulator
Sep 24, 2021

Gas Station Simulator ends up as one of the better ‘simulator’ games out there. Tasks get repetitive and there are moments where I did think to myself ‘why am I spending so much time playing this.’ But ultimately it held my attention and I enjoyed running my station even if it did have a few rough edges. I guess like running a real Gas Station this game is filled with financial challenges. The stress of juggling customers and employees and after a long gaming session you feel like you need a good sit down with a good coffee. But despite all this, it makes for a pretty fun video game. But I can’t guarantee running a Gas Station in real life would be this much fun.

Spacebase Startopia is a pretty complex space base builder that’s marred by poor tutorials. If you can manage without the tutorial and dive right in you might get on fine. Overall, Spacebase Startopia is an enjoyable game once you give it time and get into it. One thing in particular I enjoyed doing was watching the visitors go about their business and having a great time on the fun deck. Kinda made me wish I could join them!

Is The Banner Saga for you? Could be, if you’re into SRPGs, stories with tough choices and real consequences, or Viking stuff. The combat isn’t what I’d call super addictive or mind-blowing fun, but it’s nevertheless unique and engaging. I like that it’s fairly simple yet quite challenging (unless you play on Easy difficulty). I love that the visual novel element is very, very substantial. It’s half the game’s weight, even if not half the game’s length. Combat isn’t merely broken up by cutscenes where you’re passively watching. Here, you’re directing the story. Or at least the details, if not the overall plot. Most notably, you decide if major characters live or die. The Banner Saga trilogy is an all-rounder. Despite an initially confusing plunge into the deep end, I came out gasping at its beauty, most of all the landscapes and hand-drawn combat animations. Both story- and combat-wise, expect a meaty game lasting 30 to 40 hours or more.

Liked - Chef's Tail
Sep 22, 2021

I must confess at first I just couldn’t find my stride in the game, for which the controls were mainly to blame. But Chef’s Tail tells a sweet story about the after life, making it a green lush place and cooking dishes to relaxing back ground music. If you like simulation games with questing, gathering and interacting with the spirits that populate the after life, then this may be a game for you. I do feel some bugs need to be repaired. What would make this nice game a great game is changing the controls on the Switch.
