Blue Fire was a game I really wanted to like more than I did. I loved the art style and the doom and gloomy feel the game was going for, the main character is also instantly likeable. For the most part, I did enjoy the gameplay but the niggles I had with pathfinding and frustrating platformer sections did damper my experience. Though it didn’t fully light my fire I can see this being something special to other gamers. If you like your 3D adventures this is a game well worth looking into. Just be cautious if you’re not a platforming fan.
Persona 5 Strikers is a game I really enjoyed playing and definitely one of the best Action-RPG collaborations I have seen come out of Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force studio! The trademark bombastic style of the original is still present and it’s elements shine through! The gameplay is really simple but also fun. I definitely will call this a worthy follow up to the original! I recommend this game 100% especially to those that have played Persona 5 or Persona 5 Royal.
As a game that came about by the creative director hearing a lecture on Forman’s casebooks, Astrologaster fits really well as a game. The idea to go with astronomy as the ‘skill’ with which you solve issues is a brilliant one. Leading with how Forman ‘cured’ the plague, to the Spanish Armada and gold fortunes, all to gaining his medical license, this package is a fun game to play, I recommend Astrologaster to anyone that enjoys this style of game, for it is put together incredibly well. Plus, at that price, what a bargain
If you are after a challenge (without the cheat) with classic old school bombs then Dungeons & Bombs is your thing. I’d wait until the game had an update as at the moment, once you discover the cheat it takes all the enjoyment out of the game. I do hope the developers update the game soon to remove it. And…what’s with the beard?
Horned Knight won’t set the world on fire, with its simple graphics and gameplay that doesn’t offer anything particularly new. But just like a regular coffee, I drink on a daily basis sometimes having more of the same is just fine. Horned Knight plays well, performs great and I personally had fun creating my own story about Hunter the Knight which I would have never been inspired by had this game not existed. In all seriousness, I do hope Horned Knight does lead the developer onto future projects. It follows the simple rule of game development, being fun.
Undermine is a rogue-lite that doesn’t reinvent the wheel compared to other games in the genre. But this wheel is of high quality and made to such a high standard it’s hard to ignore. If you’re old or new to the genre Undermine is a title that you can sink hundreds of hours in long or short bursts. Undermine is easily up there as one of the best titles in the Rogue Lite genre. Excellent stuff
The amount of puzzles offered by Codebreaker Puzzle 1000! is impressive: one thousand puzzles per language set. Personally, the English puzzles were too easy for me, while the Japanese puzzles were difficult and not my idea of a good learning tool. But if you already like cipher or codebreaker crosswords, you might still enjoy this simple, straightforward version. As a game, I would have given a “Not Sure” rating, but since Codebreaker didn’t raise my hopes with great promises of fun or learning, I wasn’t let down (since I had low expectations). It is pretty barebones, so think of Codebreaker less as a game and more as a digitized book of crosswords.
I have an entertaining time while playing Healer’s Quest, the writing has given me a laugh a few times. The gameplay is pretty solid but in shorter bursts. I don’t think Healer’s Quest is a game you could play for hours on end. At its price point of under £15 in the eShop, you certainly get your money’s worth and an enjoyable, humourous take on the RPG genre.
Overall, Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos is a highly entertaining game that can be enjoyed alone but just feels a bit more alive if you’re able to play it in co-op. A few niggles and odd pacing issues pop up but don’t totally deter away from the entertainment on offer here. Whether you want to play in long or short bursts Rogue Heroes is a delightful adventure worth investing in. It sure takes a lot of inspiration from Zelda but that doesn’t mean it’s not just as entertaining. Nice job. If you want to try the game before you buy there’s a free demo available on the eShop. And for those who have completed their epic quest….. 8!
If you haven’t been playing much interactive fiction, just remind yourself to switch mental gears and put on your metaphorical reading glasses. After I made that switch and carved out time to enjoy 80 Days slowly, I really enjoyed the little stories that make up Passepartout’s grand adventure. After six playthroughs, spending about two hours per playthrough, there are still many cities I’ve been thwarted from reaching and mysteries to fully uncover. Perhaps I’ll revisit old cities just to take in the scenery if I had rushed through them earlier. I’ve almost died, but I’ve yet to actually die. Who knows, perhaps I’ll stumble upon a plotline that lets me!
You won’t find the depth of territory or building development that you do in Civilization, but you will find a complete and engaging strategy game. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV is packed, full of different scenarios, with hours upon hours of quality strategy war gameplay. There is quite a lot of nuances to the game which I’m still learning, but if you do stick with it, I think it proves to be a very rewarding strategy game!
NUTS is an adorable walk through a forest of tranquillity. The gameplay is fun and unique, and nicely paced. The game doesn’t feel too hectic or too slow, and the specific requests from Nina players must achieve for each level increase in difficulty and keep the game interesting. The story is fabulous, especially if you love (or even just like) squirrels. A small group of people trying to protect animal habitat from a huge mega-corporation that wants to tear it all down in the name of profit. It is a story that is, sadly, all too real in this day and age. You’ll be rooting for yourself, the forest, and the squirrels the entire time as you try to capture their adorable furry faces in your camera. Definitely pick up this game if you like: calm, relaxing games, squirrels, photography and unique art!
Summer Catchers is an enjoyable romp helping Chu see the ocean. When I first started playing Summer Catchers I wasn’t too sure what I thought of the game, but you know what? It grew on me! As I’ve mentioned Chu has a can-do attitude which really does rub off on you and makes you want to try to succeed. I like the art style, and even the gameplay itself becomes highly addicting.
Bugvasion TD feels like a pretty standard tower defense game, which is unlikely to win over new fans to the genre. It’s a hard genre to really reinvent but the developers clearly put a lot of care and attention into this project. The game keeps you interested by making use of the environment and firing off skills at the right time to keep you engaged with the tower defense experience rather than sitting back and just watching. If you don’t mind your insects then there is a solid gaming experience here. I sure won’t be able to look at bugs in my garage the same way again for a while.
I went back and forth on this one for a bit. It can be a bit dull until you get a lot of buildings going, and the constant interruptions that you can’t delay or skip entirely can be annoying. Ultimately, the charm of running my own movie studio won out and I am pleased to give this game a thumb’s up.
Aground is a super fun game, with lots to do in it. Plenty of crafting, mining and so on to keep you amused. The story twists are interesting, your never quite sure where it will all lead to. It can get a little repetitive as regards the collecting of resources, but what game doesn’t. If you’re a fan of games that focus on survival, collecting resources and crafting and at the price point for Aground I can highly recommend it!
Halloween Forever is a retro treat on Switch. It reminds me of the days when developers came up with wacky but original ideas and somehow made them work on the hardware. But while Halloween Forever has the originality and retro charm it also brings retro warts; like one-hit kill spikes and sending you back to the start of the game when your two lives are spent. If you love your retro titles this one comes highly recommended. Halloween Forever is a game that can be enjoyed all year round and not just for Halloween.
From the art style to the overall story, Half Past Fate: Romantic Distancing is a short wholesome little rom-com. The game does everything I expected it to and does it well. I haven’t played the first game so it was a delight to be introduced to the Half Past Fate experience through this game. If you have played the first game I definitely recommend you should download and enjoy this mini-episode too!
Kowloon High-School Chronicle is a really fun old-school dungeon crawler that fans of niche JRPGs will enjoy. I personally had a lot of fun with it and I really love how the game leans into the episodic anime presentation and vibe. I can definitely say that this game is a cult-classic in my opinion!
Despite the grim context, the game is suitable for older kids (perhaps aged 10 and above?) and doesn’t go into that brutality much. Playing Flower Collectors might generate interest in learning about Spanish history or about political systems. While the game doesn’t go into the history and politics much, it creates emotional interest in the characters affected by that setting. Would I recommend The Flower Collectors? Yes, if you’re looking for something very story-focused and don’t mind waiting for things to happen. Even if you mind waiting, it might be a good exercise in quiet observation and putting yourself in the shoes of a man like Jorge.
