A fantastic looking game that builds a great sci-fi world only to trash it with an unenjoyable combat challenge.
At 4K/60, Need for Speed Unbound is a clear showcase for the new generation of consoles"
"As Darktide's levels aren't grouped into acts, it's much harder for Fatshark to tell coherent stories across them"
"Life in the Abbey becomes something of a cross between XCOM 2 and Fire Emblem: Three Houses"
An entertaining remix of familiar action mechanics and narrative tropes, Evil West is a solid modern beat-em-up that puts combat first.
Floodland is a city builder that triumphs because it focuses on its citizens as much as the city. A strong narrative both in its story and in your interactions with the clans means constant decision-making that'll always make you think in a way that city builders rarely do.
"The open world inherently changes so much for the series that it needed a total ground-up rethink of the mechanics"
Warzone 2 makes a good first impression. While it shares some similarities with its predecessor, Infinity Ward has delivered a more tactical battle royale that smartly subverts expectations.
"It shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that Goat Simulator 3 is a game best enjoyed with friends"
Jumpship's debut is a fantastic sci-fi tale with an intense atmosphere and wonderfully touching narrative, even if there are a few puzzle and movement frustrations.
"Many developments are outside of your control, yet rarely in games does the passage of time feel so intimately significant."
Sonic Frontiers features the kind of lightweight yet engaging storytelling that should easily enrapture fans young and old – though I'd hate to be a child forced to play through some of the abysmal platforming featured throughout. Was taking Sonic open world an ambitious endeavor? Yes. Did it pay off? Absolutely not.
A beautiful world filled with things to discover, and a fitting close for Kratos' viking adventure that only misses full marks thanks to a light touch opening half that takes a while to hit its stride.
"Marvel Snap is designed for a generation of players too distracted to keep track of an overly complicated metagame"
When taking charge of the action, Bayonetta is more fun to rip and tear with here than ever before, with some smart evolutions in how her role as a summoner can add to her combat without taking anything meaningful away. But some of the same issues that plagued its predecessors are just as present here as well, if not more-so
Signalis conjures a memorable retro-futuristic vibe with its art design, matched with a story that explores the terrifying extremes of sentient life. But its Resident Evil inspired systems feel overly mechanical and fail to produce tension, draining energy from a potentially chilling scenario.
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign is a riot from its impressive opening act to its explosive finale. While we're still waiting to test the multiplayer, the campaign makes a great first impression on behalf of the entire experience.
Simultaneously both full of heart and unapologetically in-your-face, it takes everything you loved about its predecessor whilst gently – almost invisibly – buffing the things you didn't like so much, too. What a treat.
This isn't the game that Gotham deserves, and it's not the one it needs right now either
PGA 2K23 is a fine golf game that builds on its predecessor in every way, with fabulous gameplay, shot craft, and depth.
