8.5 / 10.0 - Shovel Knight Dig
Oct 5, 2022

Shovel Knight Dig is a great and accessible roguelike that proves that the Yacht Club Games knight is capable of leading good adventures in different genres. While not without its flaws, this nimble and fun journey manages to entertain by wisely using risk and reward dynamics in various aspects of its design until victory is finally achieved. Let's keep digging then!

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero is an excellent JRPG and a perfect entrypoint to Falcom's franchise, which yearly renovates its ambition to be the biggest and best story of the genre. Its release on the west, even if late, shows that some things are worth waiting; and a good adaptation to Switch makes this adventure practically perfect on Nintendo's hybrid system.

7.5 / 10.0 - Temtem
Sep 22, 2022

Temtem is a fun RPG, but it definitely lacks originality. Without a lot of ideas of its own, it's hard not to think about the concept of a missed opportunity, especially when you consider the creators' multiplayer ambitions and the pretty stable formula. Even so, it is an adventure recommended for fans of the genre — it is enough that expectations are properly dosed, as there is absolutely nothing revolutionary here.

7 / 10.0 - Saints Row
Aug 25, 2022

With a generic open world, an uninteresting cast, and an extensive list of bugs, Saints Row fails in its core mission to introduce the franchise with pageantry to a new generation. Here you can still find traces of the uncompromising creativity that once put the series on the industry and gamers map, but for the most part, Volition's work shows that renewing for the sake of renewing isn't always the best choice.

9 / 10.0 - Digimon Survive
Aug 21, 2022

Digimon Survive took me by surprise and soon became one of my favorite games this year. Its daring blend of visual novel and turn-based battle snippets may not be perfect, but it represents a thought-provoking new look at one of the most captivating franchises of the 1990s. Its charismatic cast and the constant feeling of melancholy and discomfort that hangs over this universe make this an adventure capable of keeping the player for hours in front of the console, always waiting for the next events. At its heart, it's a story about the power of friendship, as Digimon has always been. However, the mature approach makes Survive surprising and unmissable. As a result, on the anime's 25th anniversary, we're the ones who get the gift.

Thanks to a competent port, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is the best version of one of the best superhero games ever made. It doesn't matter if you're an inveterate fan of the hero or if you're just looking for a fun adventure without much commitment, Insomniac's work has set a new standard of quality for Marvel's productions in games, and, thanks to the improvements, this is the perfect occasion to save the world again or for the first time.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak succeeds in its mission and justifies its existence as a paid expansion through fun monsters, difficult hunts, new biomes and lots of content to explore alone or in multiplayer. Initial progression issues aside, Sunbreak complements what was already great, extending the lifespan of one of those rare games, which in its complexity and abundance of features are capable of holding audiences for years.

Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness is a pleasant surprise and one of the best games released for the Switch this year. Its unique combination of tower defense and frantic action is nothing short of addicting and the great amount of content here present makes it a title to play over many weeks, months and even years. Adding online multiplayer and a heftier campaign are only the cherry on top of a cake that offers the right amount of nostalgia and novelty. Recommended.

8 / 10.0 - Coromon
Apr 12, 2022

Strictly following the feat of your inspirations can prove to be a double-edged sword, but in Coromon's case, the mix of nostalgic formula with punctual additions works too well to be ignore. In the end, the reality is that the adventure through Velua may not be as bright as the sun (or its great reference), but it doesn't stop being fun. And that cannot be overlooked.

7.5 / 10.0 - Young Souls
Mar 18, 2022

Another worthy representative of the new era of beat'em ups, Young Souls is a fun title that is likely to please fans of the genre. Although its protagonists sometimes tread a dangerous path between daring and boring, and the Switch adaptation isn't the best technically speaking, here's a charismatic adventure with moments of brilliance, especially in multiplayer.

10 / 10.0 - Elden Ring
Mar 4, 2022

If I had to use one word to describe Elden Ring, it would be “spectacular”. In many ways, this is FromSoftware's magnum opus and the game the studio always seemed to want to create. The fact that even its current performance issues aren't enough to deter a genuine recommendation is a testament to the quality of one of the most influential studios of all time. Like Dark Souls before it, Elden Ring carves its name in history and should deservedly influence countless works in the years and decades to come. Who will benefit, in the end, are us, the players.

Rise of Third Power is a competent homage to the golden age of classic RPGs. Despite the flaws in crucial points of the genre such as the story, it is possible to feel at different times the developers' affection for their work, so that, with controlled expectations, it becomes fully possible to find fun in the adventure of Rowan and his unlikely team.

8.5 / 10.0 - Demon Gaze EXTRA
Feb 3, 2022

Demon Gaze Extra is the definite edition of one of many cult titles the PlayStation Vita had during its lifetime. The quality of life improvements and notable graphic update to high definition allow this charismatic game to reserve its place as one of the best Dungeon RPGs available on the Switch.

9.5 / 10.0 - Monster Hunter Rise
Jan 28, 2022

Living up to its name, Monster Hunter Rise elevates the long-lived Capcom franchise to new heights. Though its fundaments didn't suffer drastic alterations when compared to previous titles in the genre, the new additions such as Wirebugs and the Palamutes make it the fastest and most enjoyable Monster Hunter so far. The adaptation to PCs only further highlights the general quality of one of the best RPGs of the last few years. A must-have.

10 / 10.0 - God of War
Jan 21, 2022

God of War is one of the best games of all time, and one of the few that I would rate as essential for any gamer. The impeccable PC adaptation makes this the definitive version of this modern classic and the perfect appetizer for a certain Ragnarök that is approaching this year. Unmissable.

Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX successfully brings two classic games to today's platforms. Even more than twenty years after their original releases, the unique concept remains fun and interesting, and the implementation of the search for a music catalog ensures that part of the magic of generating new monsters through discs remains preserved, albeit partially.

Baldo: The Guardian Owls is a curious case. The legend of the pure-hearted child has its merits, but as time passes in its world, it becomes clear that it lacks the refinement that makes its greatest references shine. Patient The Legend of Zelda and adventure games fans will find fun here, but it's not hard to think about what was missing for this game to reach higher levels.

Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain manages to successfully bring the dormant franchise to the new generation. Its almost complete focus on multiplayer and the relatively low number of minigames preclude a more incisive recommendation, but players who are aware of what to expect will find here one of the best educational games in years. After all, who was it who said that training your own brain can't be fun?

7.5 / 10.0 - Undungeon
Dec 6, 2021

Undungeon has its merits and should be on the radar of every player who wants an RPG that values the narrative and the complexity of its systems. Unfortunately, issues such as the stiff movement and questionable difficulty prevent the title from reaching the pantheon of great independent games, but it's undeniable that there's fun to be found here — it's enough that expectations are correctly adjusted to reality.
