Critic Reviews for Kandagawa Jet Girls
Kandagawa Jet Girls has some rough edges to its presentation, but the core racing action is far better than expected.
Kandagawa Jet Girls follows the unfortunate pattern that many of HONEY∞PARADE GAMES latest titles have fallen victim to. There's style and charm galore, with sharp character visuals, fun music, and a charming anime-as-hell story mode. The actual gameplay, though, is rough at every possible edge, presenting a half-baked version of a truly interesting idea that simply wasn't executed on well. There's a lot to love with this game, but unfortunately, there's plenty to dislike as well.
Kandagawa Jet Girls delights with its boisterous, glowing presentation, cast of vibrant characters, and array of fun side-attractions. But the jet-ski action itself is mostly dull, struggling to offer a decent challenge or a genuine sense of speed. Jet Girls rides waves of goodwill thanks to its infectious personality, but this eventually gives way to tepid, monotonous gameplay, hampering what could have been one of Marvelous' best releases yet.
It's a real shame that even though the game looks so bright and colorful the whole package is just incredibly dull. With only a handful of game modes, a bland story, and no local co-op mode to spice things up a bit, it's not going to take you long to tire of this. Even if you're a fan of the anime it's probably better to give this one a miss.
Whether you enjoy KJG depends on what kind of fun you’re looking for. If you want a racing game, this might not be for you. If you want to ogle and/or glam up a squad of anime girls, then you’re in for a good time.
Combining some fun mechanics unique to surfing the waves and a little gunplay to keep your opponents from getting too close, Kandagawa Jet Girls offers a compelling racing experience.
This is a rather unusual experience, which in some ways makes it pretty interesting. The core concept is actually fun, provided you find the right amount of challenge, with enough details to make it interesting. Different teams and people have their own stats, you can control looks, and obviously tracks offer different challenges. It's enough to find it enjoyable, provided you have reasonable expectations. It might not be Mario Kart, even if it is similar, but it does a good job of presenting a fun idea and giving players things to mess with.
While Kandagawa Jet Girls is somewhat entertaining on the whole, its gameplay simply doesn’t excite like it should.
