Super Mega Baseball 4 is my favourite baseball game of all time thanks to its top-notch customizable gameplay, oodles of modes, and hilarious and welcoming atmosphere. Plus, it reminded me why I've always loved baseball games even from the good old NES days.

Super Mega Baseball 4 confirms, once again, the quality of the Electronic Arts sports series. Somewhere between the lightness of arcade gameplay and the depth of refined game dynamics, Metalhead Software's baseball wins and convinces. With a generous play offering and addictive modes, the title is a good choice for both fans of the genre and those who want to approach a virtual version of the sport. Especially for the latter, do not fear in the face of initial embarrassments: the rhythm of the diamond may win you over.

You could say that with three prior releases already running the bases, Super Mega Baseball 4 doesn't hit a grand slam, but it's still great fun.

A little over three years ago, I reviewed Super Mega Baseball 3 for the site. It wasn’t the first baseball game I had played, but it was the first after I found a deep enjoyment from and interest in the sport. Now, I have the honour of reviewing the next title in the series, the cunningly titled Super Mega Baseball 4. Has a three-year wait been worth it? Find out in this rapid review.

This game is quite deep. You can completely adjust your playing style and strategy to what feels best for you. In the end it has become an extensive baseball game in which you can put in a lot of hours. It takes a while to figure out all the button combinations, but after that there's plenty of fun to be had. Moreover, there are no annoying microtransactions to make you spend even more money. Looking for something a little more light-hearted than MLB The Show, but want a game that's pretty deep? Then we highly recommend Super Mega Baseball 4.

At this point, there’s not much I can say about Super Mega Baseball 4 that I didn’t already say about Super Mega Baseballs 1, 2, and 3: like its predecessors, it’s an outstanding baseball game that’s a lot more fun to play than the annualized PlayStation flagship MLB game. Any worries that a higher profile or a bigger budget would hurt the game are unfounded. In fact, four games in, this might just be the best Super Mega Baseball game yet.

Super Mega Baseball 4 is a highly addictive, arcade sports game that removes the fat and delivers a truly fun experience that is as customisable as it gets. The EA Sports BIG banner may be gone, but under its new publisher, Metalhead Software is doing a fantastic job of carrying the legacy it left behind.

Is Super Mega Baseball 4 the awaited sequel I was hoping for? Not exactly. The presentation is better, the gameplay is still fantastic and some new features – such as team chemistry – are great for those who, like me, enjoys spending time building up their league. But, if you’re only in for the exhibition matches and enjoy a quick round of baseball, you better stick to Super Mega Baseball 3 for now.

Super Mega Baseball 4 is mostly more of the same, but when we’re talking about such a strong series, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The excellent core gameplay here is as great as ever, and the fantastic new Shuffle Draft mode combined with a ton of baseball legends to take on the field should grab the attention of both new players and existing fans of the series. If you’re happy with one of the past games in the series, Super Mega Baseball 4 may not be a must-have upgrade, but it’s definitely the best baseball game on the market.
