Despite some disappointing options and feature exclusions, Super Mega Baseball 4 is a strong alternative to the annualized sim-facing MLB game from Sony. Fans of retro-style arcade baseball games will find a lot to love, and roster customization enthusiasts have their new gold standard.

Super Mega Baseball 4 is replete with goofy energy, and baseball is the perfect sport for it, even if it doesn’t always come across on TV or in the most “realistic” video games. And like every previous iteration in the series, this is the best digital version of the sport you could hope to play.

Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.

Even though Super Mega Baseball 4 is a good game that fans of this sport will surely appreciate, after three years, we would have expected a general step forward that has yet to quite happen. Franchise mode was further improved, and the addition of some baseball legends is still welcome, but some athlete animations still need to be fixed, and the HUD felt too confusing. In short, if you are looking for an excellent alternative to MLB The Show 23, Super Mega Baseball 4 could be a good choice, even if the series developed by San Diego Studio undoubtedly remains the best on the market.

Super Mega Baseball 4 begs to be played in couch multiplayer with a few cold ones over the summer, but the franchise play will keep you going way beyond that. A home run.

And all of the customisation, the staple of the series, returns in the background – allowing you to build your own team, right down to the minutiae like uniforms and logos. While there’s no shortage of pre-created content, Super Mega Baseball 4 will reward those willing to invest the time to personalise it exactly how they want it. It’s that, paired with its very entertaining arcade gameplay loop, that ensures this fourth instalment doesn’t drop the ball – even if it never quite feels like the seismic upgrade we’d expected when developer Metalhead Software was acquired.

Overall, Super Mega Baseball 4 is the best arcade-inspired baseball game on the market. It also does a great job with its simulation aspects while keeping the Super Mega Baseball form. My favorite part of the game, aside from its strong gameplay, is the amount of customization there is. Whether you want to customize players, teams, leagues, or difficulty levels, there is something you can change. Overall, Super Mega Baseball 4 is a great baseball videogame experience, especially if you want a departure from the MLB.

Super Mega Baseball 4 is an outstanding entry in the series and the best to date. I have enjoyed each entry and spend more time playing these than the licensed Show games. I really love customizing my team and taking them through a franchise season. The updates and additions here really flesh out the series and I am excited for the future. I wonder if they will ever tackle another sport. Would love to see some Super Mega Football in the future.

Super Mega Baseball 4 is simply a blast to play. It's an arcade baseball sim-lite with a focus on fun factor, and it includes a surprising amount of depth that will appeal to a wide range of baseball game fans. If you're looking for something more laid back than a full-on baseball sim, but also not mindless button-mashing, this is that game.

Super Mega Baseball 4 from Metalhead Studio is a riot to play, but it is a smaller experience when compared to its bigger MLB The Show brethren. What it lacks in the longevity of a forever MLB season, it makes up with in moxie, personality, and a bevy of ways to play. The customization and chance to play legends and vloggers will be enough reason to give this a go.

Super Mega Baseball 4 has a bit more competition on the Nintendo Switch than it used to with the likes of MLB The Show 22 and MLB The Show 23 but it's still the king of arcade style baseball games. Since MLB has moved beyond the R.B.I. Baseball series, there's really not much else in this genre. If you're looking for a fast, fun, easy to pick up and play baseball game, Super Mega Baseball 4 is gonna be right up your alley!

That being said, Super Mega Baseball 4 is another worthy entry in a series that offers a wacky yet surprisingly realistic and rewarding alternative to MLB The Show's more polished recreation of baseball's players and stadiums. The new legends in the game are a fun cross section from different eras of the sport's history that mix well with game's fictional roster of players, who come complete with their own distinct appearance, personalities, and traits. There's an impressive array of ways to play, whether you prefer to play versus the game's AI or against others online. The game's "ego" or difficulty allows you to fine-tune every facet of the sport precisely to ensure that you're finding an adequate challenge when facing the CPU or online opponents.

Once again, EA and Metalhead Software have produced a seriously well-crafted baseball game without taking itself too seriously.

Repetitive gameplay and no sense of progression hamper an otherwise fine entry to the series. Super Mega Baseball 4 could be better if there was more to do than the same thing over and over again.

Super Mega Baseball 4 reminds us of the games we used to play growing up. The gameplay has the perfect balance between arcade and simulation. While we recommend SMB4 to any sports gaming fan, we think the younger generation will get the most out of it.

Super Mega Baseball 4 stays on safe ground, improves where it needs to, and ends up offering a fun experience that's deep and challenging enough to suit all types of players.

Overall Super Mega Baseball 4 is immensely disappointing and an unworthy successor to its predecessor. SMB 3 was a genuinely fun and clean playing arcade baseball game, and never needed to be more than that. Now, though, it seems like the series is being positioned as a viable alternative to the MLB license. The new game modes, efforts to bring real-world names into the fold, and aesthetic shifts all seem to be designed to pivot Super Mega Baseball to become something to take more seriously and commit more time to. You know, like MLB The Show. Unfortunately, these new additions are directly at odds with arcade good times and now, thanks to the influence of EA in all likelihood, we’ve been dumped with a series experiencing an identity crisis.

With Super Mega Baseball 4, Metalhead has another solid baseball title on its hands. The existing modes get enough overall improvements to make them worthwhile, while Shuffle Draft keeps things fresh for a long time. The introduction of pros is awesome, but the game did well to not forget the originals, while the gameplay remains rock solid. Baseball fans of all types who aren't hung up on only playing with the current pros will enjoy this title.

Super Mega Baseball 4 may not reinvent the franchise's formula, but the addition of the Legends and the massive visual upgrade seen here is more than enough to keep the series on track. It is highly recommended for baseball fans looking for a light and quick fun.

Super Mega Baseball 4, like its predecessors, has become the new standard for arcade sports games upon its release. Metalhead Software has refined near perfection over the past few years and I'm in love with the lineup of MLB Legends and the new addition of Shuffle Draft.
