Critic Reviews for Drova - Forsaken Kin

Drova: Forsaken Kin is a deep experience that feels enjoyable whether you're jumping in for an hour, or five.

Drova is an old-school action RPG with modern sensibilities. Unlike the games from which it draws inspiration, its focus on community makes the player feel they're part of something bigger than the patronage of the local tavern. Better, it provides a real sense of accomplishment as your character slowly learns how to survive this grim but engaging world.

Drova is a fascinating game with compelling themes and worldbuilding, but the overpowered enemies and technical glitches in the game hold it back from being truly spectacular. Despite its flaws, this is a solid game for those who like fantasy and action.

Drova – Forsaken Kin is an action CPRG that keeps you on your toes. The action is exhilarating, your decisions have no judgment, and your playstyle is your own. But this is tempered by a difficult beginning, a lack of decent maps, and combat that's not in your favour. While the game still promises a good time for CRPG fans, it may not be the easiest entry for others. Stay the course and fight through the difficulties to find a game that delivers on its premise.

Drova – Forsaken Kin is a remarkable RPG about loss, struggle, and redemption. It's mysterious and captivating and its story is engrossing. Gameplay isn't complicated, but all of the game's mechanics are interwoven in a way that will always have you strategizing and formulating your next scheme. Combat is fun and inventive with multiple ways and facets to interrupt your opposition and take them down. Quests are abundant and it's entertaining traversing this relatable inhabited world full of colorful characters. While drab, music plays its part well enough and the varied sounds construct an interesting playing space. The abundance of bugs are unfortunate and the convenience of playing this on the Switch is diminished due to the bad framerate. Nonetheless, playing Drova reminded me of the days where I would spend all day in my room playing Champions of Norrath to level up and explore an exciting world. It is a great game that demonstrates an excellent feeling of exploration and adventure through its core gameplay.

Drova: Forsaken Kin is a pixel art RPG with some qualities enough to pay a good tribute to the classics of the genre, but which ends up hindered by confusing navigation and the numerous barriers placed to delay the player's progression.

Drova: Forsaken Kin tries to mimic the "Nintendo Hard" action RPGs of yore, and succeeds to its detriment. If you're the sort of masochist who loves stunt challenges in Soulsbornes, you might find the 8-bit aesthetic and obtuse systems enjoyable. If you're not, then not so much.
