Azure Striker Gunvolt Trilogy Enhanced is a love letter to the old-school game design philosophy of "less is more" replayability. The few levels in each of the three games hold up across multiple playthroughs without feeling dull or repetitive thanks to strong level design and solid gameplay. However, while this is an amazing handheld experience, its age and laser-focused handheld design show up in the worst ways on a big-screen TV: it feels busy and the graphics look a bit too blocky. However, this is definitely a title to recommend for those looking for a Switch 2 game to fill ten-minute gaps in their day-to-day life instead of doom scrolling online.

Azure Striker Gunvolt Trilogy Enhanced – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a stunning suite of great games brought to their definitive forms. The Gunvolt series endures thanks to its mixture of gratifying score attack gameplay and a high skill ceiling, excellent character design, artwork, music, and a compelling serialized story that weaves together all of these elements in an inspired form. While the updates and improvements to each game help, time has also been kind to my thoughts on Gunvolt 3. Gunvolt 1 and Gunvolt 2 remain great games thanks to their interesting and emotional stories in conjunction with smartly crafted run-and-gun gameplay. Azure Striker Gunvolt GX, the headlining new mode for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, is also solid. While it did not go as far as I would have wanted in story or content, it’s a really fun avalanche of fanservice for players who have stuck with the series up to this point. The dual character setup, as well as the Inspiration and Boost system in conjunction with a revamped Gunvolt and Copen, makes for what I feel is the most fun arcade mode gameplay the series has ever seen, even in spite of a lack of new stages or bosses. Whatever becomes of Gunvolt 4, this new system needs to be its foundation. I think Gunvolt as a whole is a brilliant series, and this collection, in conjunction with the recent Luminous Avenger iX collection, makes that even more keenly felt.
Azure Striker Gunvolt Trilogy Enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition celebrates the legacy of the most famous Adept of all, offering an edition truly worthy of his journey in the gaming world. While those who already own the individual adventures may need to weigh whether the improvements and additions are significant enough for them, there is no denying that this is currently the definitive way to experience these adventures on a Nintendo platform.
