Pokémon Pokopia is a smashing homerun. Whether you’re looking for a game with an emotional mystery story of what happened, a game to build your wildest creations, or even just a game to get to spend time with some of your favorite pocket monsters, there is a game here for everyone. The game just oozes sweetness, and I already know that this is one that I am going to drop over 100 hours into this year alone. Simply put, whether you’re already a fan of Pokémon, a newcomer to the series or just a fan of cozy games, Pokémon Pokopia is absolutely a worthwhile buy, and is everything that I wanted Animal Crossing New Horizons to be and more. It is an early game of the year contender for me and a reason to pick up a Nintendo Switch 2.
Pokémon Pokopia is a fresh new IP from the beloved namesake that brings new life to the franchise. Those looking for a lovely sim with a ton of addictive qualities will no doubt lose a ton of time in a wonderous experience.
The content Pokopia hides rewards those who dive in, something that is naturally reinforced by its history, giving the series, currently celebrating its 30th birthday this year, another, almost essential dimension.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been so pleasantly blown away by a game, but Pokémon Pokopia has continued to surprise and delight me with every step. This is no doubt going to be one of the standout games of the Nintendo Switch 2 and of the year, as the addictive gameplay loop, charming world and characters, and seemingly endless amount of content make it 100% worth playing.
A post-human reimagining of Kanto, Pokopia is a cozy, high-concept fusion of Animal Crossing and Minecraft. By centering its 40-hour loop on a shapeshifting Ditto and a real-time ecosystem, it crafts an addictive social sim that masks its surprisingly dark lore with a polished, 60 FPS charm.
Pokopia already leaves a very positive impression after the first few hours. The attention to detail, the beautiful presentation, and the strong sense of nostalgia quickly make the game feel special. The moment when the classic starter Pokémon appear in particular shows how skillfully the game plays with the memories of many fans. At the same time, the idea of having your own island introduces a fresh gameplay element that creates a motivating sense of progression. From a technical standpoint, the game runs smoothly and feels noticeably more polished than some of the recent Pokémon titles on the Switch. The only drawback is that the controls can feel a bit awkward at times. Even though I haven’t finished Pokopia yet, many signs already suggest that this is a very lovingly crafted Pokémon adventure. For fans of the series, it could be exactly the game many have been missing in recent years.

Pokémon Pokopia is the Pokémon game we didn’t know we needed. With incredibly player-friendly systems, building little homes and habitats for dozens of Pokémon while solving the mystery behind the disappearance of humanity comes together to create an addictive, chill experience that I can’t see myself putting down anytime soon.
Pokémon Pokopia finds new ways to revitalise the crafting and “cosy life sim” genres that extend beyond leaning on its IP power. It’s wide, deep, and charming in a way that feels special and could redefine expectations for Pokémon spinoffs going forward.
The Switch 2 exclusive Pokémon Pokopia is a mix of Minecraft's building, Animal Crossing's decorating, and Viva Pinãta's species gathering. The relaxed pace combined with the series' collect-it-all mentality is really addictive, although the Nintendo-esque clumsiness of slow menus and game mechanics occasionally raises the annoyance curve.

Pokopia is not a great Pokémon game. It’s a great Animal Crossing game and a great Minecraft game that’s disguised as a Pokémon game. That’s what makes it so special.
Pokémon Pokopia feels like a bit of a radical step for the franchise. By removing battles and focusing entirely on creativity, cooperation, and environmental restoration, it reimagines what a Pokémon game can be. What did we get? A game that feels comforting yet ambitious. How? Well, it may look simple on the surface, but it is surprisingly deep once you start experimenting with its systems. Cozy gamers will find a well-filled sandbox, full of charm, while Pokémon fans will discover a world that finally lets them live alongside their favourite creatures rather than command them. And perhaps most impressively, Pokopia stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the games that inspired it. It combines both the warmth of Animal Crossing and the creativity of Dragon Quest Builders, but it ultimately becomes something entirely on its own. Pokopia is one of the most refreshing Pokémon games in years. And if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to make some more houses for my Pokémon.

If you’ve read my review so far, you won’t be surprised that I’m giving Pokémon Pokopia our highest rating. The developers took the best of several other ace games and added them to the world of Pokémon, making a game that will prove to be a real time-sink. You don’t even have to be a real Pokémon fan to enjoy Pokémon Pokopia. Even if the critters are all new to you, you won’t have any trouble connecting to them and their endearing ways. Remember the feeling of finding new territories in Dragon Quest Builders? You’ll feel the same here. There’s a storyline to follow, but I think the real draw will be the way you can create any island you wish. Like in Animal Crossing, your imagination can flow freely. At first, though, just enjoy the small ways you can bring the biomes back to life and not look too much at the wonderful creations others have made. Take your time and enjoy!
For fans of Pokémon and creative sandbox life sim games, Pokémon Pokopia is a special departure within the series and a real must-play.

Pokémon Pokopia is easily one of the most refreshing entries the series has seen in a long time. By shifting the focus toward construction and living alongside your Pokémon, it turns the traditional formula into something incredibly mellow and absorbing. Thanks to its solid mechanics and top-tier presentation, it’s clear the franchise still knows how to innovate. A few systems might feel a little unpolished, but overall, it’s a standout adventure that definitely deserves your time.

Pokémon Pokopia has managed to master the life simulation genre, delivering a complete and incredibly captivating gaming experience. Despite a somewhat lengthy start where the player is held a little too hand-holding, the game truly shines once you have complete freedom to dictate your play session. Between building, completing quests, exploring, and customizing, Pokopia proves engaging and, as your adventures unfold, utterly enchanting. And if Game Freak and Koei Tecmo decide to expand the game's content in the coming months, we'll have not only one of the games of the year, but one of the games to come. A new benchmark in the life simulation genre, it's a breath of fresh air for a franchise that sometimes struggles to reinvent itself.

I had literally no expectations for Pokemon Pokopia, and now I'm absolutely in love with it.
Pokémon Pokopia’s sound design goes well with its visual appeal. The music is both nostalgic and new, mixing Junichi Masuda's famous Kanto themes with themes from throughout the 30-year history of the series. There are CDs all over the world that players can find, which let them make their own mixes that honor Pokémon's musical history.
