Critic Reviews for Aces of Thunder
Aces of Thunder feels like it's missing some basics, like tutorials, feedback on hits, and an informative HUD. I know it's a sim, but what's the point of simulating me being in a plane and not knowing where to go? What kind of commander says there's enemies incoming, but with no further details, like direction? That, along with some frustrating issues with the controls and fiddly use of a DualSense while in VR just leaves me coming away from the game more frustrated than elated. If you've got the patience to get through the trial and error, you might enjoy this very realistic flight combat sim, but the multiplayer still won't be well populated without crossplay.
An historically authentic military flight sim that rewards the hard work put into mastering its combat, although there was no need for it to be quite this inaccessible to non-propellerheads.
The core of the game is here, but the overall package feels unfinished or missing the fundamentals to make it a rounded experience. Add in a charismatic narrator to guide you into the game, as well as some tutorials or a license mode and it could help to make the game more accessible for beginners.
Aces of Thunder delivers a unique and immersive World War-era aerial combat experience. Although the controls can sometimes feel challenging, the competitive atmosphere and engaging gameplay environment push you to complete missions and dive into even more matches. It’s a must-play experience for anyone who owns a virtual reality headset.

Aces of Thunder isn’t a game for everyone, yet it certainly deserves attention. Gaijin’s title stands out as the most convincing VR air‑combat simulation available, thanks to its accurate and demanding flight model. The downside is the need for pricey gear like HOTAS controllers, since standard inputs make the experience harder to manage. Once you overcome this hurdle—made tougher by the lack of a proper tutorial—the game rewards you with an intense and thrilling experience that will delight anyone who loves shredding enemy fuselages thousands of feet in the air.

In summary, Aces of Thunder delivers an incredibly realistic experience of piloting World War II combat aircraft while also allowing players to take part in numerous aerial battles from that era. When it comes to the flying mechanics themselves this is the one and only title that can truly compete with it is Microsoft Flight Simulator. Wonderful game.
