Critic Reviews for FIVE: Guardians of David

It's hard to recommend FIVE: Guardians of David to anyone. Fans of action RPGs have literally dozens of better games to choose from. Even gamers who would like to play an RPG without being assaulted by bloodshed have some excellent choices, such as the Torchlight games. Aside from the novelty of the Biblical theme and story, FIVE: Guardians of David's gameplay ignores a lot of what recent action games have added to the genre: strategic groups, tactics, character development, customization — FIVE has none of these things. Its heroes are bland and its enemies even duller.

All in all, FIVE: Guardians of David is a very solid, well-priced ($24.99 on Steam) ARPG that will give players a lot of satisfaction and many hours of enjoyment. Fans of ARPGs will find a lot to like here as there is no question that it stands alongside the likes of Diablo, Torchlight and Titan Quest in a very favorable way.

Overall, Five: Guardians of David is an entertaining Diablo-like. It's a loot-heavy adventure with unique characters that each have their own specialties and skills. It isn't perfect, as the save system could have used a little work and there are some minor battle issues, but it's enjoyable enough and constantly rewards you for playing. Plus, it never feels like the items you're getting are going to waste, since you can donate them for additional perks. It's an interesting and substantial action RPG for people who want a religion-based historical experience that isn't too preachy.

FIVE, at its core, is a competent action RPG with fun abilities and some original ideas. But with achingly slow opening hours, limited character progression, loads of meaningless loot, and an utter lack of difficulty, its appeal is limited.

A great entry in the ARPG genre and one of the greatest representations of the Bible in a video game to date, I recommend Five: Guardians of David both for the Christian who wants to see their faith represented in a video game, and also for the gamer looking for a great story full of action and depth.
