Angeline Era is a successful experiment in how action RPGs might have evolved in the 3rd dimension, lacking a driving narrative but delivering an engaging gameplay experience from start to finish.
I can’t overstate enough that I imagine Angeline Era is what it would feel like for Nihon Falcom to return to Ys’ bumpslash combat. It is an unbelievable triumph, success and love letter to the RPGs of yesteryear. What’s within is a superb refinement on the niche ‘bumpslash’ combat, providing ample fine-tunings to make you feel well-equipped and versed in how to tackle its challenging arena gauntlets. With that comes a magical world filled with a uniquely non-linear story where you’re unearthing the path forward and discovering the potential of its universe, your very self. It is peak comfort food RPG goodness, and a must-play for the retro lover in you. Join me in the task to bump the world.
Angeline Era is built around a simple premise, and it doesn’t pose as if it’s blazing any new trails. But with time as its ally and a visible love for the early PlayStation era of gaming, Angeline Era is a lovingly crafted adventure that made me feel like I was sitting in front of a CRT in my childhood living room.

Angeline Era asks of its players for a religious devotion to the thoughts and limitations of an era of gaming that has long since passed. Forcing you to forego modern comforts in the name of nostalgia. It's haunting, but it also has some pretty solid hooks.
The real hook, however, was just how eager I was to keep exploring, discovering new dungeons, and challenging myself against whatever the game threw my way. Angeline Era kept me thoroughly engaged throughout the fifteen hours of my first playthrough, and with a plethora of difficulty modes to choose from, I can easily see myself returning time and time again to push my skills even further.
The gameplay in Angeline Era is challenging and entertaining, reminiscent of Ys games, but its story feels even more important.
