Skautfold: Moonless Knight may not be outstanding, but it clearly had the potential to be. Its engaging story, atmospheric music, striking art, and Metroidvania-style gameplay offer an enjoyable experience though narrative and combat flaws hold it back from reaching its full potential. Still, it's worth a try for fans of indie Metroidvanias.

All in all, Skautfold: Moonless Knight is a game of contradictions. It is atmospheric yet unpolished, ambitious yet uneven, conceptually rich yet technically rough around the edges. For players who enjoy dissecting flawed but fascinating indie titles, there is definitely something here worth seeing. The world is peculiar and unique, the systems are unconventional, and the tone sets it distinctly apart from most modern Metroidvanias. However, those seeking precision-tuned combat, refined exploration, or a coherent narrative will likely feel more like observers of a curiosity than recipients of a recommendation. Moonless Knight is no masterpiece, but neither is it a forgettable game. It is the work of a developer whose reach exceeds their grasp, yet who still manages to create something that stands out from the crowd.

Skautfold: Moonless Knight doesn't try to compete with the giants of the genre. It lacks the budget, depth, and polish of the major modern soulslike and Metroidvania titles.

It’s a failure of a Metroidvania, and it’s a bad and clunky action RPG as well, with progression mechanics that fail to synergize with the rest of the gameplay and ultimately drag the experience down even further. The experience is wholly disappointing, and Moonless Knight is simply not worth a player’s time.

A top-tier pixel art adventure that rewards your curiosity, even if the lack of a proper map marker and accessibility hold it back from greatness.

Skautfold: Moonless Knight is one of those games that grabs you without warning. Its dark and mysterious world compels you to explore and carefully consider every move, and the challenging combat keeps you constantly on your toes. The console version successfully captures the essence of the original PC game. Ultimately, it's a game to be enjoyed at your own pace, leaving you with the feeling of having discovered something truly special, despite being part of a franchise with five installments already.
