Critic Reviews for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
Modern Warfare 4 wraps up the series with several shocking moments and ends on a high note.
Whether you should invest in the first CoD on a Nintendo platform for over a decade comes down to the old Switch port chestnuts: Do you own another platform, and how much do you value portability? Call of Duty veterans who have followed closely its highs and lows over the last decade could probably knock a point off the score below; you likely won't be as wowed by MW4's sheer spectacle, but you should definitely play it somewhere. For anyone with a Switch 2 who's been waiting a long time to answer the Call, though, this is an excellent demonstration of why this crusty series still matters to so many. It's a bold, bombastic shooter, and it's now running very well on Nintendo hardware, day-and-date with other platforms. Oorah, indeed.
Modern Warfare 4 is the best Call of Duty since Black Ops 2, with a blockbuster campaign, endlessly fun multiplayer, and solid DMZ mode.
Modern Warfare 4 had a tough time on its hands bringing the story into line, but it does an amazing job of just that in a relatively limited runtime.
Call of Duty might not always get the critical recognition it deserves, but with Modern Warfare 4, Infinity Ward has delivered an experience that’s easy to recommend.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 boasts the series most well-rounded experience. Excellent outings for campaign, multiplayer, and the outstanding DMZ mode come together to make for a strong Modern Warfare entry, and possibly the best of the reboot series. Infinity Ward has found their magic again – this is how you evolve a long-running franchise.
MW4 ain't perfect but it gets the fundamentals so right that IW's conservatism starts looking less like a lack of ambition and more like a much-needed intervention. The campaign delivers proper spectacle, DMZ generates the sort of unscripted chaos that makes you forget what time it is, and MP finally remembers that a shootout should be decided by who's better with a gat, not who's better at off-the-wall interpretive dance. The matchmaking and map/spawn issues need squelching, but they're blemishes on an otherwise superb package.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 might be the closing of a chapter but it is closing on a series high. Both its campaign and multiplayer are a callback to beloved eras but in DMZ, Infinity Ward has potentially found a new permanent mode players will get lost in.
