Hell Rising is a great excuse to return to the world of Nioh 3 if you finished the base game and want to explore some new real estate. Nioh 3 is one of the best action RPGs from this year, and that’s saying something. Hell Rising might not be a monumental, game-changing DLC, but it’s a fun and challenging way to extend Nioh 3’s already excellent game play, mechanics, weapons, and story.
If you're already a fan of Nioh 3 and simply want more content for the game, Hell Rising is worth your time. However, on its own merits, its only interesting additions are the new zone and a weapon archetype.
Nioh 3: Hell Rising is a solid, ambitious expansion that integrates seamlessly into the base game, offering a dozen additional hours of brand-new content and a new difficulty level to tackle.

Nioh 3: Hell Rising expands the adventure with a new map packed with settings and content. The Hoko & Shield and the “Hundred Demon Realms” Painted Scroll add an interesting twist to the combat system. New bosses and customization options further enrich the experience, though there are still some recycled elements and moments of difficulty that feel a bit unbalanced.

Nioh 3: Hell Rising delivers an engaging return to the game's stellar combat and exploration, framed by an atmospheric and beautifully designed new region. While an uninspired rogues' gallery, a lower-than-expected difficulty, and an underdeveloped narrative climax keep it below the standard set by past expansions, it stands as an enjoyable first entry among the two planned DLCs.

Nioh 3: Hell Rising is more Nioh 3, and if that is good enough for you, then you'll likely be set for enjoying this 8-10 hour expansion that provides a whole new location to explore, and a very versatile new weapon. While the new Guardian Spirit is not going to likely be part of your arsenal, it is the reuse of so many encounters that disappoints the most. Nioh 3 is a truly fantastic game, and while Hell Rising furthers my time with it, I remain cautious if my next trip with be looking to the future, or another trip down memory lane.
Nioh 3: Hell Rising is, for better and worse, a bit more of Nioh 3. Sporting some of the most well-designed areas in the franchise visually and in gameplay, while adding certain features to really push its gameplay loop further. However, its short runtime amplifies the lack of new content in the game. Ultimately, it feels more like an update than a new experience, with a worrying promise that more will come later on.
