Ratata Art's debut title, Ratatan lets some of the old Patapon developers explore the unique mix of rhythm and command-based action once more.
Ratatan is a welcome injection of weird into the Switch 2 roster. Hiroyuki Kotani builds on the legacy of Patapon with an addictive musical strategy title that will have "Rata" and "Un-Taka" rattling around your brain long after you walk away from your console.It will please fans of the developer's previous rhythm-action strategy, while offering something fresh and challenging for newcomers. It's a bit light and can feel too chaotic at times, but it's easily one of the most unique titles on Switch 2.
Ratatan offers up some unique visuals and enjoyable characters, but it never really goes beyond that.
As a true spiritual successor to Patapon, Ratatan is largely successful, giving us a modern, vibrant take on a stone-cold classic.
There is a lot to love about Ratatan, least of all the clear amount of love that has gone into paying homage to a series that has long been forgotten by the one who still own it. As a spiritual successor to Patapon, I see potential. Unfortunately, Ratatan is too eager to chase after what has become the flavour of the week when it comes to "replayable" game design, and has cost itself its identity. What is there, works. I just think it needed to go further to truly see it pay back.
Ratatan builds on Patapon's legacy and innovates with more intense action: the protagonist moves freely, while musical commands guide Cobun's army.
