Critic Reviews for Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest
A strong narrative could have overcome too-simple mechanics and quest design.
Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest from Bamtang Games is an excellent first step into the world of Warrior Cats on console. It brings some good exploration, wonderful customization, and a lot of gameplay elements that make the experience far deeper than expected. It does have some room for improvement, but it’s a good game that should make fans of the series happy.
Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest surprised me. It has a competent and easy-to-understand combat system. It has a foundation of moving your cat up the ranks of the clan and improving relations within your chosen clan. If it had a bit more substance to its campaign, it would be a standout game on its own right.
New story set in the universe of the Warrior Cats series, featuring exploration and turn-based combat
Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest offers a charming adventure where you can create your own cat, join one of four clans, and explore forest territories. Turn-based combat and character customization provide some enjoyable moments, but repetitive quests and underdeveloped interactions keep the game from reaching its full potential. Fans of cats and the Warrior Cats series may still find plenty to enjoy.
While it has some unusual visual quirks at times, for cat lovers or people who just enjoy a more unusual RPG experience this is simply different
It provides most of what fans of the series would want and expect of it, while keeping things reasonably accessible to players such as myself, who are in it for the kitty-cats. There are elements that could have been done better, but for the larger part it’s been satisfying ear skritches and wonderful belly rubs for all.
Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest transforms a literary franchise rich in mythology into an RPG that is competent in its structure, yet timid in its ambition. The turn-based combat, which features genuine layers of strategy, demonstrates that there are interesting ideas behind this adaptation. The rest of the experience, however, falls short: it is marked by generic quests, repetitive activities, a vast but largely non-interactive world, and a narrative progression that is difficult to discern.
