It seems very unfair to suddenly thrust such a dated game back into the limelight, but it ready would've been better if Putty Squad had stayed in retirement.

You should only pick up Putty Squad if you're a fan of the original, and have an unhealthy affinity towards platformers. Everyone else need not apply unless the game drops to a rightful price of $10 or less.

Putty Squad isn't a good game by modern standards. It's repetitive, confusing, dull, and a reminder that the medium has evolved. That doesn't mean that there isn't a niche that may still enjoy this, and if you happen to squeeze into that cross-section then there's plenty to sink your teeth into here. Everyone else looking to relive the past may be better off tackling one of the Blue Blur's adventures, though – and letting this blue blob fester in the pipes beneath the sink.

As a remake of a game that did not leave its mark, Putty Squad does not stand out. Its glitches and flaws, which include a serious lack of fluidity in some areas, make it a less-than-enjoyable platformer, which should only be considered by those who truly wish to try every title in the genre.

Sometimes it's great to see an old classic remade and introduced to a new audience, but all these years on, Putty Squad just doesn't hold up with its less-than-perfect controls and quickly-repetitive gameplay. It isn't to say that nobody will enjoy it, though, because there are plenty of levels and challenges to tackle, and it's possible that being familiar with the original game or Super Putty on Super NES could mean this will be more appreciated by such players. For everyone else, however, it's wise to pass.

Putty Squad is not a bad game, and with the relative lack of titles currently released on the PlayStation 4 it does fill something of a void. Still, platforming enthusiasts with PlayStation 4s do have access to Rayman Legends, rendering it rather pointless to grab Putty Squad unless you're an absolute genre purist.
