Critic Reviews for CastleStorm (VR)

The virtual reality in CastleStorm VR does not add much to the original game's formula, that still remains as exciting as four years ago.

CastleStorm VR is not a necessary VR release, but it is a fun one, showing the possibilities for traditionally non-VR titles on the platform. Head tracking works well, and playing the game feels like you are playing with a physical medieval play set. If you've played CastleStorm before, it may not be worth picking up again. At the end of the day, this is the same game that's been coming out in various forms for the last four years, but I've had the most fun playing it in virtual reality. With CastleStorm constantly updating and making better versions of itself, I'm just waiting for Zen Studios to announce a sentient CastleStorm's campaign run in 2020.

CastleStorm crops up everywhere, so chances are you've already played this game before. To be fair, the PlayStation VR version improves on what's come before, by leveraging the technology to give you a better view of the battlefield before you. The game's still a little overcomplicated for our tastes, but those who like multitasking may enjoy that aspect. And if you do, then the addictive reward loop and customisable castles will probably keep you hooked longer than you anticipate.

CastleStorm VR is a relatively enjoyable game with an addictive loop, and it's easy to lose hours to it. While I wish more was done on the VR side, it's a solid addition to the game. It doesn't do much to improve the lackluster story or repetitive gameplay, however. Addictive or not, some variety would not hurt at all.

CastleStorm VR is the same awesome experience from a new visual perspective. The core game remains as fun and polished as ever, but the perspective offered with the GearVR adds a fresh take on the battlefield. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the perspectives used between battles.

Despite the unusual source material for a VR, CastleStorm VR is up there with my favourite PSVR games. It may not be a huge title from a huge developer, but the whole package is almost perfectly formed.

I really like CastleStorm, and I'm so pleased with what Zen Studios has done to make the VR version of it a meaningful upgrade. We're well overdue for a proper sequel though. There's so much more that Zen Studios can do with the base formula, and I really think this has the potential to grow into a very substantial franchise.

CastleStorm has always been a very fun game and now you can experience that fun in virtual reality.
