You have to be a rally game fan to enjoy WRC 6 much, but if you are, then I suspect you’ll appreciate the authenticity the game offers that other, more general interest rally gamers, like Dirt, do not offer.

The knock-on effect the game's various problems is a somewhat hollow driving experience overall. WRC 6 is valiant in terms of its content and its knowledge of rallying, and fans of the sport and of the genre will find an enjoyable package here. However, the simple reality is that this year fans are spoilt for rallying games and there are many better experiences to be had. It targets neither DiRT Rally, on the sim-side of the spectrum, nor the more all-encompassing, centre of the road experiences such as Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo. The result is a somewhat diluted rallying title with plenty of substance, but less than ideal execution. This is yet another driving series that needs to go back to its roots.

WRC 6 is a massive step up from its predecessor, and I really enjoyed the game and will continue to play it over the coming months. The game does have its flaws in terms of graphics and the occasional lazy pace notes, but these do not out-weigh the enjoyment you get from playing it.

WRC 6 isn't all that bad. It's up to you to learn how to drive the rally way, as the game fails to help you out in that regard, but everything feels fine once you master it. The career mode is lengthy, and the number of available tracks and the various multiplayer options give you plenty of ways to extend the experience long after the career is finished. However, the bad co-driver system makes things unintentionally harder, and the presentation lacks some real polish. It certainly isn't the best rally racer out there, but it does well in a pinch, especially if you've already worn out Dirt Rally and are trying to satisfy your craving until Dirt 4 hits.

WRC 6 offers a solid and perfectly respectable rally experience that has a more accessible first route into rally games for the uninitiated. A certain improvement on its predecessors, it sets out a new roadmap for how the titles should be going forward. Although shallow in parts - especially audio - there is still a lot of enjoyment to be had with fun handling and the mix of real courses, and 'based on real locations' special stages gives an authentic World Rally Championship experience. Ambitious eSports aspirations were perhaps a stage too early for this series, but there is definitely potential here and it will be worth keeping an eye on the next title to see if the team can iron out some of the wrinkles.

WRC 6 is every bit as deep as you want it to be. While driving takes some getting used to, and the career mode is a bit straightforward, racers looking for the perfect time will find a lot to like here.

If you are looking for hardcore simulation to play with a steering wheel, try looking elsewhere. But if you prefer using a gamepad, WRC6 is a good choice. Less demanding racing players will be happy to play it.
