Critic Reviews for Total War: Rome II – Empire Divided

Total War: ROME II – Empire Divided is a mixed bag. There are some new, intriguing mechanics, some ideas borrowed from previous installments, but at the same time the gameplay still suffers from the same problems of the original ROME II, and there are some notable absences such as the Hordes. At the end of the day, it's a missed opportunity.

Empire Divided picks an engaging, strife-filled period of Roman history and gives the game new administrative layers and narrative trimmings, with a degree of success. But, ultimately, all roads lead back to the Rome 2 of 2013.

Total War Rome II Empire Divided Empire is a good DLC who brings some fresh elements to an old-looking game. It's focusing on one of the most interesting periods of the Roman Empire (the reign of Aurelian). We can regret the lack of new content in politics after the free update. Total War fans are still unlikely to be disappointed. But to many other players, this DLC will feel dispensable.

Total War: ROME II - Empire Divided brings back the glory of Rome II: the best years are gone, but the campaign anche the historical context are definitely interesting.

Empire Divided is a fun change of pace from the standard Rome II fare.

Empire Divided is a competent addition to Rome II. Although no noteworthy changes can be felt in the game's performance, its gameplay has improved considerably. The new politics system, which is Creative Assembly's response to the boring endgame, has made it so that the threat of an unexpected enemy attack is always felt in big empires. The cult system could introduce new challenges for those who appreciate the micromanagement part of the game, but its overall effect on its flow seems minimal. All of the famous 3rd century leaders present in game have interesting stories to tell, and perhaps the chaotic world of this era is the perfect opportunity to show off the improved gameplay of Total War: Rome II.

Empire Divided is an interesting, and possibly the best content ever released for Rome 2. Its new campaign and story arcs – that often feels like it took cues from Total War: Warhammer – turns the 2013 game much more compelling. But, at the same time, its poor AI and unit pathfinding turns most battles into a chore. Issues that nowadays are hard to ignore when games like Total War: Attila improved in pretty much every aspect.

If you're in desperate need of a historical strategy romp, you could do a lot worse than Empire Divided, and it's the best piece of Rome DLC by quite a large margin, but barely a turn went by without me wishing I was bullying Elves or fighting the hordes of Chaos instead.
