Critic Reviews for Flood of Light

Followers of melancholic-looking puzzle titles who like to sit down and cosy up on a rainy Sunday afternoon and test their brain with some slow-paced, solo gaming sessions will want to give this one a spin. The title does a good job of churning out challenges that will keep you entertained for hours at a time. However, if a deep story that whisks you off your feet with a meaningful narrative, tight plot and likeable characters is more your bag, then Flood of Light isn't the title for you. We recommend spending your cash on something like Candle: The Power Of The Flame to scratch your 2D Puzzler itch.

For some, Flood of Light will be a relaxing, thought-provoking puzzler perfect for a rainy day. For others its slow pace, frustrating collectibles and difficulty will mean reaching for another title instead.

Flood of Light is a passable title for those that are hankering for a few hours of puzzle solving. While repetitive settings and cumbersome controls hamper the overall experience, there's enough here to justify the $4.99 price tag.

While touchscreen use is possible, this game is best enjoyed as a handheld game as it's easy to switch between controls and feel the light use of the Switch's HD rumble. The mechanics are explained and demonstrated very clearly to get players started, but it's important to think outside the box as the puzzles increase in difficulty. It's easy to feel frustrated for a while on a certain area, but once you strike on the solution, the game feels wonderfully satisfying.

Flood of Light is a charming and very relaxing puzzle experience that will keep you engaged for a handful of hours as you try to lower the water level of a city abandoned by its people. Sure, it has a minimal story that is told by the robots you meet and the letters you collect from the mailboxes you search, but the solid difficulty curve for puzzles and its simple gameplay mechanics will keep you coming back for more.

Even if puzzle games aren't your thing, it's worth fighting through its obstacles and frustrations—or using a guide to carry you through, which I ended up resorting to—in order to experience Flood of Light's beautiful, melancholic yet hopeful vision of a post-climate change world.
