Just as Summer Game Fest (and E3 before it) is the biggest gaming event in the US, so Tokyo Game Show is in Japan. It's not the only major event happening this week, however. Tonight, professionals gathered at Iida Hall in Tokyo for the Japan Game Awards 2025, all ready to see which title released this past year would receive the highest honors.
There were a total of sixteen winners this year, with some being entirely unsurprising and others coming out of nowhere. All were selected by an eight-person panel of eight professionals from all over the industry, with Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai acting as its chairman. Fans’ votes factored majorly into the process as well, meaning that the winners decided last night should be a decent representation of the true sentiment here in Japan.
Aside from Mr. Sakurai, the panel included Hideki Kamiya (Bayonetta, Devil May Cry,Okami), Keiichiro Toyama ( Silent Hill, Siren, Slitterhead), Yoko Taro ( Nier, Drag-on Dragoon), Toby Fox ( Undertale Finally Makes it to the Xbox One Deltarune), Katsuyoshi Kotaka (Danganronpa), Ishii Jiro (Time Travelers, 428 Shibuya Scramble), and Katsutoshi Iida (Aquanaut’s Holiday, Angara’s Song).
