Handheld gaming devices have come a long way in the last few decades. It started with Mattel's Auto Race in 1976; later, Milton Bradley introduced Microvision in 1979, which could switch cartridges. But these devices really started to gain popularity after Nintendo released the Game Boy in 1989.

Thanks to Game Boy's success, we got the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo 3DS, all of which had some of the most memorable titles in gaming history. But it wasn't until Wii U's commercial failure that, years later, we got the Nintendo Switch.

Switch's design was so revolutionary that it spawned other PC handhelds like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion GO, which also had detachable controllers, and many others. PlayStation did try to join in on the fun with its PlayStation Portal, but since it required you to have a PS5, it isn't exactly what most people wanted.

That's where Xbox's latest partnership with Asus came in, as together they created the ROG Xbox Ally series. But the problem is the X variant costs nearly twice as much as the Xbox Series X digital.
