Epic Games has announced sweeping layoffs that will impact over 1,000 people today. It's the second time major layoffs are impacting Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite and the Unreal game engine, in three years. Though 2026 is still relatively new, there have already been several notable waves of job losses and studio closures across the industry.
These latest cuts from Epic feel eerily similar to the last time the developer had a mass layoff. Epic Games eliminated 16% of its staff in 2023, impacting hundreds of employees across the company. At the time, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said the job losses were a result of operating costs that outpaced revenue, forcing the company to make cuts in order to stabilize the business. The company restructured, and signaled that it would focus on its core priorities like Fortnite and Unreal Engine. It's nearly identical to the reasoning the company provided for these most recent job cuts.
A veteran Ubisoft development studio deals with a reduction in staff that directly affects several of its unannounced upcoming projects.
